We publish this week a cotnmuni
cation which discourses somewhat on
the other side of the question. Base
ball has frown in intensity and de
veloped in science nntil none but the
most skillful players are in demand
to produce a game which appeals to
the initiated. It is a question of bat
teries and those who are very expert
command salaries far beyond what
any small town can pay. It there.
fore becomes a simple business prop
osition. Can a town like Milford,
where the attendance on games ran
ges about the 4000 mark in a season,
with say receipts of about f 1000, at
ford a team iwith sufficient rank to
draw those who have been accus
tomed to witness games of the high
est skill. That base ball is popular
no one will deny, but does the Milford
team as it has been constituted In the
past and probably must be In future,
present sufficient attractions to out
siders to induce any considerable
number to come here who would not
otherwise do so. People attend be
cause the grounds are convenient and
it is a cheap way to be amused for a
couple of hours, but suppose there
was no baseball would they not seek
some other form of amusement or
recreation, It cost last year about
1?00 to support the game, money
raised by subscriptions, entertain
ments and admissions. About (1100
of this sum went out of town to the
players, in salaries and guarantees.
Was this sum compensated by an in
creased number of guests attracted
here by ball or does such a condition
largely benefit the town. If ball is
not worth what it costs, or if the
game is not worth the oandle, would
it not be better to revert to some otb
er form of attraction less expensive.
There are several ways in which
money may be spent, with probable
profit, in advertising the town, in
bettering the conditions of roads, in
street lighting and in buying lots and
building bungalows. There should
be a full, fair and free discussion of
Milford needs and the business men,
hotel keepers and others should meet
and discuss plans, ways and means
and all aim to pull together. Milford
needs a business mens association,
and she needs it the worst way.
A number of banks and Trust com
pauies recently have advanced the
rate of interest on deposits to i rer
cent. If a bank has a large borne
discount patronage at 6 per cent It
can afford to pay this rate but if it
must depend on investing in bonds
there can be but little profit, while
the inducement to take risks for the
sake of a larger gain increases. Loans
on real estate are seldom above 6 per
?ent now and they can be taken only
by trust oompanies and savings
banks. Competition in rates of in
tereat paid should not be permitted
to weaken the stability of a financial
Institution.
