Terrible Threat Made by the BraHaay
' Negro Stevedore.
X story to be good does not neces
sarily hare to be new. The following
story, wblcb was a favorite of the
late Senator esxmack, of Tennessee,
falls within the rule:
"A brawny negro," said Senator
Carauck. "was once employed as a
stevedore on the docks at Memphis to
help to unload a cargo of hardware
from the steamer Anna P. Silver.
The negro was carrying anvils
ashore, and so great was his strength
that be carried one under each arm.
"In crossing the narrow gangplank
with aa anvil under each arm the ne
gro slipped sad fell Into the water.
"He came up purling and blowing.
'Prow down ar rope,' he yelled.
The man, oa board laughed at hint
la oenaion.
" 'Prow down er rope,' pleaded the
negro, treading water vigorously.
"Getting nothing but leers, the ne
gro cried excitedly:
" 'Per de Inn's saks, man. frow
down er rope or I'll drop one er dees
anvils.' " -
