&akn,
The boy problem is a ser ois one.
We have here the usual number of
boys, some Idle, aome good lomj
tad, some vulgar, gome profane,
ome obsoene and a lew who a) p r
ntly combine all the above obnox
leas qualities, The Post Office cor
ner is a favorite place for the whi le
aggregation to assemble, and fre
quently the ears of girls and young
and older ladirs, and sensitive men
are shirked by the language heard.
In d-frnse the boys say tbey have
tio place to go evenings tospend tLeir
time, unless it bd at home. We ad
mit thut it is rather tedious for. hoys
to pass every evening in the week at
their own homes and that there
should be some place where at least
two or three evenings could be occu
pied In harmless games or in reading
or other pastimes. But we have no
such plnce and the street corner be
oomea the rendezvous where the
Innocent youth may in the company
of some vicious fellowk take his first
lesson on Ihe toboggan slide toward
that evil gnal the descent to which
is rapid and easy. Boys need diver
sion. The old saying that all work
and ho play makes Jack a dull boy if
true. There are homes where per
haps there is lit'.le to attract and not
much to elevate' the youth and tbi
community it H would have sua!
boys grow op into useful citizenshlj
must av'uine part of the burCen ot
their care.
Boys cannot be crowded into
hard and fait mold of virtue they
must be patiently guided and con
trolled. The responsibility for the
oa re of all youth cannot be wholly
delegated to their parents for obvi
ous .reasons. Some of it must be as
suiiied by others if these boys are to
be kept in the paths of rectitude I'
may cost something of time ami
money even partially to do this, but
ran we measure character by cash?
T he good citizms of the town mihi
well give this matter serious atten
tion. Sun Jay scbojls have a place
if they are energetic, in reforming
but they have little Influence here.
Night schools would not meet the em
ergency. We have no reading room
no Y. M. C. A. and the only method
which sea ins practical is to provide
place for boys to pass a few even
ings each week arid so take from
them tht excuse that they have do
place to go but the streets. If such
place is provided and they will not
use it the way is paved to take
stringent measures to enforce their ab
seuce from street corners.
