REPUBLICAN COUNTY TICKE r, Jury Commissioner, GEORGE H. McC ARTS', Milford Borongh. The session of Congress just con cluded demonstrated in a remarkable degree the impossibility of enaoting a tariff law in accordance with the Republican national platform, that is, making the duties equal the differ ence between the cost of prodno'ion at home and abroad plus a reasonnb'e proSt for American industries, Willi oat data bearing on various industries otbtr than that furnished by protected manufacturers whose personal profit are dependent on the tariff and whose views cannot be in any sense unbiased Such manufacturers appear before the committee of Congress and as-ert that ahy reduction of the duties below - the existing law will ruin their bus! doss and throw thousands out of work. The few who attempt to oon trovert these statements are, natural ly, less familiar with the details of given industry than those engaged in it and they are generally made to ap pear ridiculous because ol that lack of familiarity. The Senator or Rep resentative dependen ton the tnana factunrs In his district in large measure for re-election is hardly in a position to treat their statements with incredulity It Is, therefore, Impera tive that Congress should have some offlicial data on which to act anl that, above all, the President who, as Mr. Talt has well said, has the entire country U,r his constituency, should possess that data also Only a tariff commission of the type designed by President Taft can furnish cuch data.
