Typical American Woman.
Outside the ranks of rising young
actresses few women have met with
such a procession of interesting nccl
dents as the Haroness von I.eyden
As a child she helped an aired man
who had fallen In the street, and he
left a fortune. Then she lost herielf
in a Hungarian forest and was found
by the (Jermnn baron who married
her. Next she wns captured in a
crater by Italian brigands, out was
rescued by carabinleri and rewarded
for delaying her captors. Then she
lost her way in China and found the
Jewelled eye of a biddha, wnleh she
returned to its owners, to be agnln
rewarded. Later on she was attacked
by a mad dog, but the brute fastened
his teeth In an ivory bracelet nnd she
remained unhurt. Yet again she was
captured by brigands In Macedonia
but was released and sent on a secret
mission by the band. Her latest ad
venture Involves the czar. He was
shooting somewhore when the baron
ess providentially got within range,
and the result is an Imperial gift as
solace for a scratch on the shoulder.

A Story ef Lord Curzon.
Here is a story of one of Lord Cur
Eon's boyish ambitions. When lie was
appointed to the vice-royalty of India
the news created some surprise, but
In receiving congratulations from his
fellow countrymen before his depart
ure he stated thnt the ottlce was one to
which ha had aspired while still at
school. From the time he first knew
that the government house at Calcutta
was a replica of his ancestral home
Kedleston Hall, near Derby, he deter
mined to occupy it as governor general
of India. When the old Kast India
Company decided to erect a palace in
Calcutta for the residence of the vice
roy they Inspected all the Btately
homes of Knglnnd In search of
model. The palm was awarded to
Kedleston Hall, and the governor-gen
eral's house at Calcutta was accord
Ingly built in facsimile of it. London

THE PENNSYLVANIA HILLS
Oh the Pennsylvania hills
How mnjestlc'y they rise
Ttll their nobly crested tops
Seem almost to touch the skies.
What wound'rous stories coi:!tl they
Our noble mountains grand. Itcll-
Of all that passed before their ken
Ere man hud trod tho land
Of ages passed awny nnd gone
Scarce any record left
Save here and there, upon time's book
By Nature's fingers deft.
A picture wound'rous to behold
Of cycles passed nway.
Tho unknown centuries, wonder filled
With what., we eanuot say.
There Is no spot in all tho land,
That so much beauty holds,
As the borders of our Key&toue fetato,
In rightful pride enfolds.
We love our Pennsylvania, hills.
We're proud to own the truth,
That every heart with rapture thrills
In age as well as youth.
The astounding fact seems to have
escaped the attention of ttie country
generally that in the Tammany
victory the prediction of the Hon.
Jaine.i K. Jones was fully verified
Speaking of this last victory of

Many Americans would add no free
dom from catarrh, which is bo ag
gravated during this month that it
becomes constantly troublesome
There ia abundant proof that catarrh
is a constitutional disease. It ia re
lated to scrofula and consumption,
being one of the wasting diseases
Hood's Sarsapnrilla has shown that
what is capable of erndicating scrof
ular, ootnletely cures catarrh, and
taken in time prevents consumption
We cannot see how any sufferer can
put off taking this medicine, in view
of the widoly published record of its
radical and permanot euros. It is
undoubted America's Greatest Med
