The occasion being her 15th birthday, a number of presents were presented to her, games played and good music was enjoyed. The afternoon and evening was spent in a very pleasant manner. Mrs. Christopher Giaebner and Mrs. Urahain Dewitt of Port Jervis will sing at the commencement exercises at the Matamoras school building today. A very pleasing program will be rendered. The IB cent tea under the auspices of the h. A. society of Epworth church was bold at the home of Mrs. George Lucky Tuesday evening and wna very well attended, a nice tea was served at 5 o'clock and a neat sum realized for the society, E. M. Kimball and family con template leaving Matamoras soon to make their home in Binghamton. Mr. Kimball's railroad run is now from Jersey city to Ringhamton, hence he is obliged to be located at the latter place Their Matamoras friends will regret their doparture. Their pretty borne on MCallum street is for salo. Mrs. Kimbnll and daughter, Flora, are very active members of Hope church and Sun day sohool and will be greatly missed also in the L, C. Slioop and little son, Hamilton Wright, who have been visiting at Mrs. Shoop's parents at Bucyrus, Ohio, for the past two weeks, returned home on Thursday. The graduating class of the Mata moras school consists of the follow ing persons : George Washer, pres ident and valedictorian, Frank Wheeler, vice president and saluta torian, Miss Bertha Robertson, sec retary and treasurer, Miss Ethel W. Crane and Jacob C. Westfall. The class colors are old rose and green. The class motto is "From the Ideal 'jo the Real," Miss Bertha Roberts is class prophet. Miss Ethel Crane delivers the mantel oration and Miss Ann Hunker responds for the Juniors 1901. George Martin and Eugene Coch ran of New York spent Sunday in Matamoras. Miss Freda Kessler, who is teach ing at Haven, N. Y., spent Sunday at he her home on River street. Fred Billmam of Newfoundland, N. J., spent Saturday and Sunday with his parents on Cookson street. O. J. Shoop delivered the bacoalaurate sermon to the graduating class. The teachers and the members of the junior and senior classes were all present. The church was tastefully decorated for the occasion with the class colors, old rose and green, and potted pluuts, palms and ferns. There was a large attendance. The choir ren dered acme pretty anthems, Miss Nellie Westfull presided at the orgun The sermon was of a high order. Mr. Shoop expluiued to the cluss that they must rely upon themselves not depend upon others aud work with a good will, have but one aiui in which to iucceod in whatever undertaking they are engaged iu take the Bdvior as their guide. The speaker alluded to David, what good deeds he did, how he trusted iu the Lord. He said that the grace aud good will of the Savior was with tiiiu and viuitud upon him in all his undertakings. Duty can make life junt and upright and strong, but in addition to all thtise love for the Iruvior makes it holy and beautiful and mout divine, and ha alo dwell ed npon the duty of lining kind nnd hnvinir conrtry and thoughtftilnnss and brolhorliness anil sistcrliness in nil their dalings with one another Mr. Slioop mule quotations from some of the popts, most of thorn very appropriate, but space will not allow nn to reproduce his serin which, all In all was the finest one ever delivered in Epworth church. Miss Bertha Bell, who has boon visiting friends at Kingston fur the pBst week, returned homo Saturday SAXDYSTOS. It Is not mi uncommon thing to hear hound dogs yelling in our field: and wood.i, and yet, Mier? is a fine of 20 dollars and costs for allow ing such dogs to run at large. If the owner should get complained of nnd fined then there is a howl from every owner of a dog nnd the fine nnd costs Is more than the dog is worth. Dogs got uniong the sheep on the Vnnsiekle farm at Iievnns killing one and injuring others. There are too many worthless dogs running nround and Warren has a good gun nnd being a good shot will make it interesting for any dog visiting there again. Horn to Peter Major and wife n son on Wednesday the 20th Inst. Mother and son are getting nlong nicely. In the statement of our county expenses I find the board of freehold ers expenses to the county is 3,H2:!.:)(l or an average for each member of the board of 251.8R. The total expense incurred in the payment of the fox bounties is 627.50 and yet some are howling about that Item and voted to have the fox bounty law repealed. I am comparing the above hills nnd don't mean to kick because the free holder is having a good thing but don't kick the foxhunter because he wants a good thing too if It is small. The school nt Flatbrook Valley has closed for the year and the others of this town will end in a few days. This causes a vacation entirely too long and In some townships the schools are kept open for 10 months and I think that is much better than having so long a vacation, I flnd by measurement that in many places the average width of the road, between the shoulders lett by the machine, Is 13 feet. Hounding up the centre of the road with gutter mud makes a ridge about the width, or a little more, of a wagon track and that Is our average road. No wonder our people are shouting for better roads Last year it was proposed to repair our school houses and it has not been done and I might say that every one needs more or less in the line ol repair. Another thing, w hy not try and enlarge the playground for most of the playground is road especially the one at'Layton and it would not cost much. The public dance at Titinans hotel on the evening of the 20th .was a huge success. Those in attendance say they had an awful good time and are eagerly awaiting the call for the next. The creamery at Hevnns is increas ing its milk receipts and the highest daily receipts were 117 cans. The drought is still with us and the lack of rain is severely fell. The rainfall since May 1st to Sunday the 21 has been only 45-100 of an inch and it is hoped that the much needed rain may come soon. I am Informed that the Brick House school building is to have Its Interior overhauled and two separate rooms made. This should have been done years ago. SAWKILL Miss Selena Monreaux of French- town visited Port Jervis Saturday, C. Quick ot this place made a business trip to Port Jervis Monday. She has by her courteous manner, patience and promptness given the patrons of the ootnpany most excellent service. The news from Turkey Is again assuming a warlike character as nn other division of reserves has been called out for active service. It is confidently predicted that should hostilities ensue between Russia nnd Japan over the Chinese situation, 't urkey, with the moral backing of England will embarrass Russia on the west thus crippling her in coping with the pugnacious Kingdom of the Mikado. , The present democratic hue and cry ngainst the tariff, under the claim thnt the conditions have changed since the Dingley law was enacted are not honest. The democrats were no more satisfied with the provisions of the Dingley law when enacted than they ar now and they do not now seek to simply readjust tariff schedules, and still leave them pro tective to American industry and labor. Let the democrats nominate G rover Cleveland by ail means if what they want is a test vote in 1001 on the tariff question.
