CORRESPONDENCE.
SANDYSTON.
A day or two ago it was my good
fortune to puss through the Brick
House in Montague. Of course I
stopped to sec my old friend Wieland,
proprietor of the hotel nt that place.
He 1ms a pet bear and it is as playful
as any kitten and as harmless. It is u
fine specimen of that fiuimiil and il
you wnnt to wrestle, Bruin is ready
for business ami seems to dearly love
to rough it w ith any one.
A party consisting of three young
men from llainesville took in the
dance at ltaymondskill one evening
last week. On their way home they
came in collision with a Port Jervis
party, and the result was a badly
wrecked waffon and a broken collar
bone for one of the ynuiir men and
3 )fne pretty bad scratches for the
other two.
Irs. Ann I'ycrson, widow of Rich
ard Ryerson, late private Co. 1, loth
N. J. Infantry, has just received her
notilication of allowance of pension
of f8 per month, and about ifSO ac
crued pension. This pension is a
very deserving one.
Mr. Edward Hhupe received a let
ter a day or two ago from Cole Shay,
lis nephew, dated EaOuaira, Venez
uela, in winch Cole states that lie is
in the enjoyment of good health and
having a good time, lie is aboard
the ship Mayflower of the navy.
The many friends of Cole will be glad
to hear of his whereabouts, as he was
formerly a resident of Sandyaton.
The "Hoe" fish law seems to be
the subject of discussion in our county
press and is much talked about every
where. If this law is kept before the
public until the election takes place
it is pretty certain that the voter will
know lust what he is voting for, and
if it fails the people only have them
selves to blame for the failure.
Specimen post oflice boxes are now
on exhibition at the Layton post of
fice and parties can be supplied by
the department and at moderate cost.
The square box is the one preferred
and as they are made of heavy sheet
metal will last a lifj time. They
will lie a great convenience to those
living at a distance from the oflice,
as well as to the carrier. !
It was the pleasure of the writer to
meet Mr. Jacob Decker, a former
resident of Walpack, but who moved
to Minnesota in 1H5G. Mr. Decker
and wife are visiting friends and rel
atives in New Jersey and the east
and his description of the west and
methods of farming pursued there are
very interesting, lie located near
where the city of Austin is situuted,
ami possesses the advantages of rail
roads and telephone and are ahead
of us in many tilings.
Hay and harvest is in full swing
and if the weather stays fair during
this week the greater part of the
harvest will be taken care of.
The picnic of the Farmers', Me
chanics' and Tradesmen's association
will be held on Aug. 2Uh and the
sale of privileges takes place on the
tilth on their grounds at the Durtis
place.
Once in a while a family changes
their name or the pronunciation of it
and now Deckertown, this county,
has grown tired of its name and
wants to be called Sussex. It has
been known so long by the name of
Deckertown that the name should
remain Just as it is.
It is rather singular that a party
not possessing whiskey can sell it,
people get Intoxicated on it and yet
the seller own no whiskey and after
selling it dare not risk taking pay for
it. Funny, isn't it.

Worms and red anta are playing
havoc with corn fields thia season.
Will Hornbeck complains that one
of his fields hna been entirely de
stroyed. Salt and slaked lime, a
tablespoonful of each at a hill, is an
effective remedy.
John Hood, our supervisor, who
was persecuted lust spring for tum
bling the ditches in the road nnd
making them impassable for the
time heing, now that they are dried
out, is being highly praised. There
are gutters now to eivry off the
water when formerly it remained in
the ruts. His section is in flrst-cluss
condition showing that he under
stands his business.

ment in the Press of Wallace &

into their store and judge by the
class and number of customers we

to go west to grow up with the
country but that they will grow nt

We are informed that Arthur

The report of what our represont

quoer. We do not think his constit

W. H. L. in a recent article thinks
this place should not be called

is made why not shorten it to plain
