THE SALE OF LIQUORS'
Unseemly cotuluot mid drntikon

eventunte in trouble for them. The

graceful and the principals ami
abettors shonUl be taught s lesson.
The hotel keepers also would do well
to read carefully tho provisions of
the act under which they hold their
licenses. The citizens of the town
are pntiont and long suffering but
there is a limit to their forbearance,
and when they move there will be
abundant evidence to satisfy the
court as to their fitness to be entrust
ed with thesnle of dangorous liquids.
Hotels ate not licensed for the sale
of liquors simply for all the money
there is in it. The act distinctly
says it is to restrain the Bale, and
when it is established that the licen
see lias violated the law, the court
must revoke the license ; it baa no
discretion. One violation ia selling
to a drunken man, another is selling
to a minor, and another selling on
Sunday. Those who handle tho
stuff should be careful that they do
not recklessly transgress tho strin
gent provisions of the act of assem
bly. They may do so with impun
ity for a time but the day of reckon
ing is almost sure to come when
they will find that the gain they
made is in no wise commensurate
with the cost which will follow.
Representative Hamilton, of
Mich., who has just returned froirj
Cuba, said of his observations while
on tho island : "I am of the opinion
that the Piatt amendments will ulti
mately be accepted by the Cubans,
and that there will be no trouble be
tween Cuba and the U. 8. There is
no mistakin? the feeling of the peo
ple, however, for independence.
Their hearts are set on it and you
hear it talked everywhere. If difTJ
culties arie it will lie because the
people are easily influenced by then
leaders, and nniall factions or partin
can attract large followings of Im
pulsive, impetuous people if the
right man is at the liend. I think
the people can be convinced in tinv
that the Piatt amendments do not
hamper their independence and that
our declarations therein contained
are only in lino with the Monroe
doctrine, as understood by all the
world."
The act of 1812 makes it the duty
of the oounty commissioners to make
out and publish, a utatemont, in
Buoh form as will show the aggre
gate value and assessment made by
each assessor in the county, upon
proporty taxab'e by law, for county
purpose. Sj far as we recall there
has never been a compliance with
this law. The commissioners under
au earlier act that of 1831 give no
tice, in one paper, of the time and
place of holding appeals but they
disregard the other act which re
quires publication in two or more
papers. Perhaps the reason, in this
oounty, may be found rieht there.
President McKiuley has talked

The most beautiful thing in
the world is the baby, all
dimples and joy. The most
pitiful thing is that same baby,
thin and in pain. And the
mother does not know that a
little fat makes all the differ
ence. Dimples and joy have gone,
and left hollows and fear; the
fat, tliat was comfort and
color and curve-all but pity
and love-is gone.
The little one gets no fat
from her food. There is some
thing wrong; it is either her food
or food-mill. She has had no
fat for weeks; is living on what
she had stored in that plump
little body of hers; and that is
gone. She is starving for fat;
it is death, be quick !
Scott's Emulsion of Cod
Liver Oil is the fat she can
take; it will save her.
