The Quay or anti Quay quostion
did not eutet into the contest here
All good Republicans worked and
voted for the struight ticket and in
one township only does it appear
that there was disaffection. There
the ticket for representative was

not ohangcd it merely shows the
ingratitude of a man after being
kept in office by the party for nine
years.

James Meddlesome Bensley, of

that Angle if elected would go into the
caucus and vote for the Ex-Senator

the ex-county commissioner but the
vote in his township would seem to
indicate that some one had a knife
out for Mr. Angle and used it freely.

CHURCH NOTES
Revival meetings will be continued
at Union noxt week.
The proceeds of our organ recital
were $31. Thanks to all contribut
ors. We desire also to extend our
thanks to Mrs. von der Iluydo who
so kindly aided us and to Mrs.
Thomas Armstrong for her help at
our rehearsals in preparations for
Monday night. I wish also to ex
tend my personal thanks' as pastor
to all members of the choir.
The committee appointed to select
a Christmas service has chosen
"The dawn of Peace." This re
minds us that the year 1900 is fast
passing away. May the new year
and the new century be to ns all a

The special sorvices held at Solioo

and thoughtful prayer. This is as

The subjects for next Sabbath are
as follows. In the morning "Draw

"Seeking the Kingdom."
Let us not forget to pray for di

services. They will begin Nov, 27,
at our home field. This will bo
thanksgiving week and a good time
for the church to show its spirit of
thanksgiving by special effort in be
half of the ansaved. Will it not bo
very becoming for you, who hivve
received all your life and have giv
en nothing in return to give your,
selves as a thanksgiving tillering.
Millions Given Away.
It. is certainly gratifying to the
publio to know of one concern which
is not afraid to he generous. The pro

have given away over ten million
trial bottles and have the satisfac

Bronchitis, La Grippe and all Throat.
Chest and Lung iiisea.se are surely
cured by it. Call on all Drnpgi.st,

SUPPLY OF SHINGLES.
It Comas Largely Frem New Bruns
wick and Quebec
Formerly all uhlnples m.1? In the
East were split from Mock and
shaved by hand with a draw-knife.
Those nited In Mnlne, New llnnip j
shire and part of Massachusetts were
pine or Bhnved cedar, sixteen Inches
long. In other otntes eighteen Inch
shingles were nanl. In the shingle
machines then made the saw struck
the bolt at the end, pawl - g lengthwise
of the block. This mnil.i a rough sur
face on the shingle, which wns raid
to hold the water and made them ret
quickly. In 18(10 there began to come
Into use machines made In (lardlner
and Hangor, Me., which cut the block
on the side Instead of the end. The
shingles sawed In this way had a sur
face almost as smooth as If shared,
and were of the same thickness.
These machines caused a revolution In
the manufacture of shingles. As the
demand Increased and cedar became
scarce In southern Mnlne, manufact
urers began to move toward the great
northern forests.
The riioenlx mill, In Frederlcton,
New Brunswick, was changed from
a long lumber mill nnd sixteen ma
chines were put In that cut 224,000
shingles a day. In 1X88 this mill
passed Into the hands of sn American
company from Cnlnis, which erected
a mill In Eilmmistnii, New Brunswick,
with seven mnchlncs. The logs for
the I'hoenlx mill are cut In Aroostook
county, Me., and driven down the ft.
John River. In May, 18N8, the first
shingle mill In northern New Bruns
wick sawing for the American market
began operating t Dalhonsle. The
owner now has mills at Cahano abJ
Notre Dame du Lac, In Quebec
The cedar forests remaining In this
part of the continent are In Aroostook
county. Me., the northern counties of
New Brunswick, and the counties of
New Brunswick, Jtlmouskl. Bonaren
ture and Oaspe, In Quebec. Here
cedar grows large, and there are more
trees to the acre than further south.
It Is found on the high land as well
as In the swamps. In Nova Scotia
cedar does not grow. In southern
New Brunswick there is not enough
left to supply ties for the local rail
roads. The locations named are the
last of the cedar forests, and these are
being rapidly denuded to supply
Shingles and railroad ties, and In a
few years all will be cut Good cedar
In nds should soon tipcome valuable,
as the area Is so limited.
The low price or sixteen Inch
shingles has caused them to be used
