The difforence botween Bryanistn
and Jacksonian or JofTorsoiilnti IX?
inocracy Is the difforoiice between
politics In Its worst sense and states
manship In its historical significat ion.
Next Novemler's vote will decide
the length of the war In the Philli
pines. If for MeKinley the war will
end with honor, If for Uryan It will
be a case of hauling down the flag to
end it.
That the Democrats Instinctively
array themselves on the wrong side
of all great political questions has
long been an aphorism, but it might
be unkind to say that they display a
similar aptitude in selecting their
surroundings. Here they meet in
the Gi-and Jury room, in Deckertown
In an undertakers shop and at Mala
moras over a saloon. Hut there is an
eternal fitness about some things af
ter all.
Susquehanna county twelves near
ly five times the sum out of the an
nual amount paid by the Erie that
Pike does yet we have more miles of
railroad than she has. Send Allele
to the Legislature and let him try to
have this injustice rectified. Can't
depend on a Democratic member.
Those have always failed to make an
attempt to protect our i i'jliU or else
Bold us out at the critical moment.
We challenge contradiction of this
statement.
The Democrats try to poke fun at
the laboring man liecau.se he is asked
to vote for a full dinner pail. Just
ank these wolfeix to point to a single
measure they have ever passed for tiie
lienetit of American wage earners.
The reply, if any, w ill be in pantom
ime by some "silent statesman," like
all our niemlwrs of the legislature
liave been, who wheD asked what they
bad done or why lie did it, either
moved out of the county or maintain
ed a golden silence. If asked liefore
before election what he proKied do
ing he simply jKiintixl to the seat and
said he wanted it.
Reports from the lower counties in
dicate that Democrats are in revolt
over self inflicted candidacy of Mutch
ler, aided by Pike, and that they are
refusing supirt of the ticket. Talk
about iiiqieiiiilisni! the manner and
method of Mutchlcr's nomination
completely overrode the w ishes of
the jieople and now if be is supported
at the polls the incubus is fastened on
this district for years. Bliow that
you uphold right and fairness by vot
ing for Stewart an so rebuke the
wrong. This w ill not make you Re
publicans but it will prove that you
are men who will not wear a tag and
tarry a yoke.

Six niontlu of the conference ye ir
have gouo. The time for our second
quarterly confete'ice is at band. It
is a time to look about us and see
how we stand. How much have wo
contributed to thd church thus far?
Have we met our obligations? If
not now is the time. Paying and
praying nro both necessary to run a
successful church.
A careful canvass has brought to
light the fact that ft large number
of old pooplo especially men, are
outside of the church, many of whom
never attend church and some of
whom are all but atheists To see
the bent form tottering to the grave
without hope is a sad picture, yet
one npon 'which we frequently can
look. What a oontrnst to sncU a
view is that of the calm serene face,
the restful trustful heart of the aired
saint, lu the great judgement day,
which face will we wear? Just the
oue one we wear bore. It will be
ono of glory or sbnuie, which?
In the revival work befure us let
the oue supreme object bo the de
velopomont of christian chnrocter.
If we loose sight sight of this our
work will be in danger of being su
perficial. True christian character
begins with conversion but- doas not
ind tili death. Character is the only
thing that has weight in the sight
of Uod. Then let us build character
for in so doing we build for eternity.

8at Next to Grant.
Visitors to Washington will proba
bly rpmomlier nn old second hand
book denier, who on nice dnya slta In
front of his shop, on the north side
of Pennsylvania avenue, just opposite
Peace Monument. He relates ono
Btory In which he and Gen. Grant fig
ure rather prominently.
The old bookseller had received a
ticket for a theatrical performance.
He went early and took his seat In the
parquet. Soon a family, consisting of
a husband and wife and several Rrown
up daughters took tho Beats to hla
right A little later a man cume and
sat on his left next the aisle. The old
bookseller Is blind In the left eye, and
did not pay any attention to the man
on his loft. At the end of the first
act the lady on his right leaned over
and asked If the stranger were not
General Grant. Bare enough, It was,
and the lady was so informed.
"I reckon you can see a bit better
from this chair where I am slttin',"
the old gentleman remarked, "and if
you think you'd rather change with
me, I'm willing."
A second Invitation was not re
quired. "And I didn't have to change
only with the woman but with the
hul family, and I thought they'd push
me out In the aisle. But I'll bet
that to this day the woman tells of
the time when she sat next to the
President," the old bookseller adds.
