If the silver qiicMtion is out of pol
ities, why whs it htinmu'reil Into a
political pliitfortn?
The DemnrnUic party never jHiint-
with pride to any business measure
that it ever enacted.
Hryan insists on being taken on
trust by a political combination, be
cause he is opposed to business trusts
and combinations.
The small boy whose representa
tions concerning the jam closet have
IxH-n discredited naturally wants to
paramount some other question.
The Hon. Adlai K. Stevenson pos
esses a keen faculty for adapting him
self to changed conditions. He now
refers to Democrats as "Bryan men."
From the silence of the Democrats
on the tariff question it would seem
that they have decided to take the
views of one of their former candi
dates and call it a local question.
Uryan sees danger I n our National
prosperity, and those wishing to do
liini justice must admit that, should
Ins opinions prevail, such a source
of danger would be speedily removed.
In one breath the Demtx'ratic ora
tor will assure his hearers that Mc
Kinley has no backbone, that he is a
creature controlled by those around
him, and witli the next breath will
accuse him of shaking the Republic
to pices in order to erect a throne on
the ruins thereof.
The Democratic candidate for the
Presidency has persuaded the Popu
lists, Democrats and Silver Republi
cans to pool their interests. In short
lie has formed a political trust for the
express purpose of destroying compe
tition, yet stands on a platform which
leclares that such methods are de
structive to personal liberty and
dangerous to National life.
Mr. Altgeld has pronounced Mr.
Uryan the givaUxt man in the civili
sed world; and Mr. Bryan has all
uloug contended that Mr. Altgeld is
one of the best judges of greatness
extant.
Jerry Simpson predicts that the
nomination of Mr. Stevenson will
give Kansas to the lU-publicans. It
looks as if Adlai was nominated in
order to have a good-natured ixtsoii
upon whom to blame the unpleasant.
Of the several nomine for the
Presidency; Mr. Uryan is far the
wealthiest, and he made all of his
money during the prosperous tinu 8
brought about by the Mckinley ad
ministration. Mammoth and medium clover

for Aug. 14. Wo are glad to have a
aingor and an instructor of her char
acter visit our town.
We are looking forward with
pleasure to our trip to Camp Tabor
a special invitation has been sent
o.it to all Epworth Lenguera to at
tond the convention on Saturday.
Christian experionoo is so varied
that, it cannot be governed by rule
A careful study of the life of Paul
his resulted in the preparation of
three sermons on "The spiritual de
velopment of St. Paul." The first
of these will be preached next sab
bath morning. The subject for the
evening will bo "The Translation at
the River" the second or the River
side Series.
The Epworth League topio for
laRt Sabbath evening was "The evil
of envy." It is well chosen envy i
the twin sister of jealousy and both
are greeneyed. Envy expresses not
only a covetous desire for what
others posses but also a determina
tion to have it. It stoops to any
low or mean means of getting it.
Envy is the poison of the devil's
rattlesnake in the heart, it is sure
death to all spiritual life. It has no
rattles however, it gives no warning
It lurks beneath the fruit bearing
bushes of life to bite or backbite the
innocent who come out to pick tl:e
fruit. Kill the serpent or he will
kill you and kill him quick.
BEKD THOUGHTS.
Idle men tempt the Devil to tempt
them. Spurgoon.
That alone belongs to you which
you have bestowed. Hindu (Vem
ana,) Conway.
All godlike things are joyous.
They have touched God, and so they
o irry with them an irresistible glad
ness everywere. Frederick W. Fa
ber.
Neither go back in fear and mis
giving to the past, nor in anxiety
and forecasting the future ; but lie
quiet under His hand, having no
will but His. II. E Manning,
The conviction that we are en
gaged in a divine enterprise gives
us the heart to work on when work
seems fruitless Clod's work will be
dine. The harvest is His, and in
His time He will produce in all its
fulness and all its beauty. No toil
for His ends in vain. No seeding
lost. No right effort utterly fails.
Philip Moxom.
Wheat is practically of the same

"What is a bargain, pa?"
"A bargiuu, Freddy, is any shop
worn tning we don't need that your
mother feels com pa lied to buy
because it's cheap."
A little girl was taken to a strange
church by her mother recently, in
which the collection was made in
the pews. On the way home she
asked, "What did you get by the
lucky bag, inn?" "Nothing," re
plied the mother in astonishment ;
and she was about to ask the child
what on earth she meant, when the
little one opened her hand and ex
claimed with evident pride, "I got
sixpence !"
At a Scottish fair an old farmer
was trying to engage a boy to assist
on the farm,-but would not finish
the bargain until he brought a char
acter from the last place, o he t,aid :
"Run away, get it, aud meet me at
four o'clock." The youth was theie
in good time, and the farmer said :
"Well, have you got your character
with you?" "No," replied the
youth ; "but I've got yours, and 1 m
no' oomiu' !"
