The Democratic cry of.imperialism
is a bugaboo. Bucli a policy could
never exist in the Unitcl States, and
the attempt to attribute it to Preai
dent McKinley 19 only one of that
party's campaign roorbacks.
Brazil intends hereafter to pur,
elm so in tne United Status all the
coal needed for her warships and
rathoads. This will be some return
for the concession we have so long
granted Brazil of levying no duty on
the ooffoo we import from that coun
try. Europe affords the best market
for American farm products and
manufactures, buying from us al
most to the extent of a billion dol
lars a year. Why not keep on terms
of friendship with our best custom
ers. In the last thirty years the num
ber of Amerioan vessels engaged in
foreign trade bus decreased by 41 per
cent. During the same period the
number of Amerioan vessels eugagod
in domestic and coast trade bus in
creased by 47 per ceDt. The hitter
are proteo ed from competition of
foreign vessels, while the former
are not.
Imports of manufactures of iron
and steel have decreased by 63 per
cent during the last thirty years,
while our exports of American man
ufactures of iron and steel have in
creased by 72 percent. Doesn't look
as though protection Injured the ex
port trade I
With 100 per cent of increase in
tlio population of tire TJuited Suites
during the last thirty years, there
has been an inorease of only 60 per
cent in our total imports on foreign
goods. This shows bow the Ameri
can workman under protection is ac
quiring the American market.
Don"'t swap horses while cross
ing a stream," is the good advice
that James Gordon Bennett cables
from Paris. The New York Herald
is out strong for President McKin
ley 'a reelection.
It was in 1895 that Senator Hoar
- delivered a speech at Plymouth,
Mass., in which he said, speaking of
the tree planted by the first Ameri
can settlers: "Its boughs hung over
the Pacific ; and in time in good
time it will send its roots beneuih
the waves and receive under its vast
canopy the islands of these. " Why
isn't this the good time. Senator?
Farmers will find a reason for the
advance in bagging and binding
twine by stadying the foreign prit-e s
for Muuila hemp and sisal, lu both
of thete fibers there has been an ad
vance of 100 per eeut in value in the
foreign market within two years.
Jute has also advanced over 60 per
(sent within the same period.
