The experiment station at State College
Centre County, offers young men a fine
chance this winter to do some agricultural
studying, of which the young men think
ing of farming in this county should take
advantage. Their Chau tauqua course can
be taken at home, the tuition of which Is
free, as well as that of all other courses.
The books required on the Chautauqua
course are furnished to students at greatly
reduced prices from retail rates. Editor
Van Etten has kindly offered to furnish
circulars of information to all who will
call for them, as you may have noticed In
a previous Issue of the Fpess. There are
six courses In all. It certainly will be bet
ter than spending one's time in stores and
saloons. No examination is required to
enter the Chautauqua course, and ex
aminations and certificates are given
through the mall, on the completion of
the course. We quote as follows, "There
Is no charge What ever for registering stu
dents in this course or for any assistance
or instruction. This course is open to all,
and may be begun at any time. Any part
of a course may be taken and pursued as
rapidly as the student desires. Do not
hesitate to get a circular and look It over.
It is a chance that our fathers did not
have. Brains must be used In farming at
the present day.' Fanners should also
make more use of the experiment stations,
by writing them of difficulties of the farm
etc. At State College they furnish even
their own postage, and are very prompt
and polite. Their prime object certainly
was for the farmers benefit. Be sure to
also have them put this your name on
their mailing list, for thoir bulletins and
reports as issued.

THE PROXY KISS.
I chanced while on my dally rounds
Among the sick and sore,
To meet two lovers, parting
Behind an opeuiug duor. m
The maid was lovely, passing fair, '
Of years about nineteen;
Had face with beauty's lines well marked,
And form of graceful mien.
An Infant rested on her arm,
One borrowed from a friend.
Which added to her gra;o, the charm
That Cupid loves to send.
With loving arms the little ward,
Her soft white neck embraced
Aud on her gentle, kindly brow,
Its chubby face it placed.
The lover looked upon tho scene
With euvy, born of bliss.
Aud for revenge, upon its cheek,
He left a gushiug kiss.
At this she smiled,
And seemed to say,
" This liule can only be
A ready proxy for to take,
A favor meant for me."
