Winds at Mattern Orchard,
an assisted living facility,
in Hollidaysburg.
He was born in Luzerne
on Oct. 17, 1921.
He graduated from
Luzerne High School,
worked at Kingston
Provision in high school
and continued working
there in between active
duty military  assign-
ments and attending vari-
ous colleges until 1947.
He was a member of the
Amalgamated Meat Cutters
and Butcher Workmen of
North America.
He enlisted in the U.S.
Army Reserve Corps in
1942. The following year,
he received orders to the
U.S. Army Air Forces as an
aviation cadet. While sta-
tioned in El Reno, Okla.,
flying his favorite aircraft,
the Stearman, he married
his sweetheart, Martha,
a US. Army nurse from
Luzerne.
He earned his flight offi-
cer (warrant) designation
in May 1945, training B-25
pilots and bombardiers at
Carlsbad, N.M., until his
honorable discharge in
November.
He graduated from
Lincoln Chiropractic
College in Indianapolis
in 1949. Returning to the
area, he joined the practice
of Dr. Van Loon and sub-
sequently started his own
practice in Trucksville.
He worked as a correc-
tions officer/infirmary
supervisor at the State
Correctional Institution at
Dallas from 1960 until he
retired in 1982. He enjoyed
his retirement, working
part-time for several years
for his friend, Bill Wentz,
at his print and die shop in
Dallas.
He attended Trucksville
United Methodist Church.
He was also a 50-year mem-
ber of George M. Dallas
Masonic Lodge, Caldwell
Consistory A.A.S.R., Irem
Temple and the VFW.
He volunteered with
the Kingston Township
Ambulance Association.
Surviving are his son,
William, Boise, Idaho;
daughter, Karen Allen,
Hollidaysburg; two grand-
children; sister, Rowena
Jones, Hazleton; nieces
and nephews.
BYTHEWAY - Lori
Olivia, 22, of Tunkhannock,
died Monday, Sept. 23,
2013.
She was born in Fresno,
Calif., on Oct. 7, 1990,
daughter of Kirk Bytheway,
Tunkhannock; and Denise
Romans, Fresno.
She attended
Tunkhannock High School
and worked for Staff
Management SMX.
Surviving are her
father, Kirk Bytheway,
Tunkhannock; her mother,
Denise Romans, Fresno;
her brother, Russell,
Fresno; sisters, Brandi,
Tunkhannock; and Sarah,
Fresno; paternal grand-
parents, Don Bytheway,

Luzerne, died Wednesday,
Sept. 25, 2013, at her
home.
She was born in
Kingston, and was a mem-
ber of the Trucksville
United Methodist Church.
She attended the Dallas
schools and graduated
from Dallas High School.
Prior to retirement,
she worked at the State
Correctional Institution,
Dallas, and was also
employed by Leslie Fay
in Wilkes-Barre and Stull
Brothers in Kingston.
Surviving are a son,
Bruce; daughter, Nadine
Santewan; four grandchil-
dren; six great-grandchil-
ren; sisters, Doris Vosburg
and Marian Williams.

SANDS - Annabelle,
84, of Tunkhannock, died
Friday, Sept. 27, 2013,
at the Geisinger Medical
Center, Danville.
She was born in
Stillwater on Nov. 28,
1928, and was a graduate
of the Tunkhannock High
School.
She and her hus-
band, the late Gerald
Sands, founded AJ Taxi
and she worked for the
Shadowbrook Dairy Bar
and Perkins restaurant for
more than 50 years.
Surviving are her
daughter, Susan Stephens;
five grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren;
brothers, Robert Lunger,
Leo Lunger and Furman
Lunger; nieces and neph-
ews.
TRAVER -Hiram David,
71, of Monroe Township,
died Tuesday, Sept. 17,
2013, at the Wilkes-Barre
General Hospital follow-
ing a lengthy illness.
He was born in Noxen
on May 12, 1942, attend-
ed the Beaumont School
and was employed by the
former Birth’s Service
Station in Dallas for
many years, later work-
ing at the former General
Cigar Co. in Kingston and
retiring from Procter &
Gamble Paper Products in
Mehoopany.
Surviving are his fian-
cé, Patricia Hatcher, of
Monroe Township; broth-
ers, Harry, of Monroe
Township; Sylvester Jr,
of Monroe Township;
Township; Gypsy Hanadel,
of Monroe Township; and
Jane Scott, of Monroe
Township.

M., 84, of Sweet Valley,
died Wednesday, Sept.
25, 2013, at the Meadows
Nursing Center, Dallas.
She was born in Forty
Fort on April 11, 1929,
was a graduate of Lehman
High School and a member
of the Sweet Valley Church
of Christ. She and her late
husband, Sheldon, owned
and operated Sheldon’s
Lunch of Pikes Creek.
Surviving are her daugh-
ters, Lora Womer, Roaring
Brook; Colleen Honeywell,
Sweet Valley; and Jill
Scott, Sweet Valley; eight
grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren.

WESTFIELD - The Rev.
Henry Edward, of Dallas,
died on Wednesday, Sept.
25, 2013.
He served in the Navy
on the USS FORESTAL
for most of his eight
years of service. He stud-
ied theology at Wesly
Seminary, Washington,
D.C., was ordained into
the United Methodist
Church as a minister in
1969 and served active-
ly at Huntsville United
Methodist Church, the
Hop Bottom Charge,
UMC, the McClure , N.Y.,
UMC and Alderson UMC,
Harveys Lake.
He graduated from
Luzerne County
Community College with
an Associate Degree in
Science. He was the vol-
leyball coach at LCCC
and coached volleyball at
Dallas High School.
He worked at Clearbrook
Drug and Alcohol Lodge
as director of education
for 10 years and his final
job was as director of the
Family Drug And Alcohol
Program at Choice of the
former Nesbitt Memorial
Hospital, before becoming
disabled.
Surviving are his wife,
Alice Shrey Westfield;
sons, Paul and Wayne;
eight grandchildren; a sis-
ter, Beverly Sobocinski;
nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations to
