ciation’s Annual Easter
Egg Hunt and Brunch with the Easter Bun-
ny on campus.
The annual event also features golden
and silver eggs among the others that are
placed on the Banks lawn.
Alexandra Strobel, of Franklin Township,
Wyoming, found the golden egg and re-
ceived a $25 gift card to Toys R Us, while
Trevor Brdaric, of Shavertown, found the
silver egg and received a $15 gift card to
Toys R Us.
Basketball legend Bill Walton
will be the guest speaker at Vol-
unteers of America’s seventh an-
nual celebrity dinner on
Wednesday, May 12, at Genetti’s
Best Western in Wilkes-Barre.
Walton was a three-time Na-
tional Player of the Year and won
two national championships for
John Wooden’s UCLA Bruins.
He went on to a Hall of Fame ca-
reer in the NBA during which he
won national championships
with the Trailblazers and the
Celtics and was the league Most
Valuable Player in 1977.
Another highlight of the eve-
ning will be the presentation of
Volunteers of America’s “Spirit
of Youth” award. This is the
agency's highest honor given lo-
cally. This year’s honorees are
Jack and Cece McCarthy, former
Back Mountain residents who
now live in Kingston, and Attor-
ney Lee Piatt, of Dallas.
Jack McCarthy is the chair-
man of the board of the McCar-
thy Tire Company and Cece
McCarthy serves as the corpo-
rate secretary.

ing Valley. Jack’s affiliations in-
clude the Wyoming Valley Heath
Care System, PA American Wa-
ter, Blue Cross of NEPA, the
Wilkes-Barre Housing Author-

ers. Cece has served the United
Way, CYC, John Heinz Rehab In-
stitute, the Red Cross, St. Vin-
cent’s DePaul Kitchen, Wilkes-
‘Barre General Hospital and oth-
ers.

of the business and finance de-
partment of Rosenn, Jenkins &
Greenwald, LLP where he has
practiced business law for 27
years.
He has also served on numer-
ous community boards, includ-
ing the United Way of the Grea-
ter Wyoming Valley. He is very

organization grow through mul-
tiple statewide mergers. He has

Northeast PA Regional Council.

FOX-56.
Proceeds from the dinner will
be used to support Volunteers of
America’s services in the com-
munity. Locally, Volunteers of
America offers a number of pro-
grams that serve at-risk youth,
low-income families, individuals
with disabilities, the elderly and
homeless young adults.
Price for the dinner tickets is
$100 for adults and $50 for stu-
dents under 18 when accompa-
nied by an adult. For more infor-

OF HAITI EARTHQUAKE

During Catholic Schools Week in the 2009-2010 school year,
students at Gate of Heaven School conducted a service project
to benefit the people of Haiti following the devastation of the
earthquake. Each day, a different denomination of coin was col-
lected. Students contributed ‘Pennies for Haiti’ on Monday,
Tuesday was ‘Nickels for Haiti,’ Wednesday became ‘Dimes for
Haiti,’ followed by "Quarters for Haiti’ on Thursday. Friday, the
final day of the project, was billed ‘Donations for Haiti’ and stu-
dents were able to contribute any amount they desired. When
the final tally of coins, bills, and checks was counted, a grand
total of $1,400 was raised by the students. Some of those who
participated in the project are, from left, first row, Joseph Was-
lin, Ava Rose Fino, Morgan Patla and Sean Boland. Second row,

DONATES CAKE TO CARNIVAL

Cristina McFarlane, a seventh-grader at Gate of Heaven
School, Dallas, volunteered to make and decorate a cake that
was donated to the school’s carnival on March 27. McFarlane
used skills learned from taking a Wilton cake decorating class to
decorate the cake with flowers and ladybugs. The cake was used
as a prize and was won by the school’s very. own first-grade
teacher, Kaye Gilbert.

Seventh and eighth-grade students from Gate of Heaven
School participated in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sci-
ence at King's College on Saturday, March 6, and won first place.
They will present their experiments at Penn State, University

SPELLING BEE HELD AT
GATE OF HEAVEN SCHOOL
Gate of Heaven School in Dallas recently held its annual Spell
ing Bee with students in grades five and six competing. Shelby
Smith, a fifth-grade student, came in first place, and Nicole Ca-
vanaugh, also a fifth-grader, finished second. The first-place
winner will compete at the diocesan level. The top 10 semi-final-
ists are, from left, first row, Nicole Cavanaugh, Olivia Carichner,
Laura Buckman and Shelby Smith. Second row, Justin Marshall,
