Movie series honors athletes To celebrate the completion of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Penn State Wilkes-Barre is host- ing a movie and discussion series highlighting the touching stories of real-life athletes. The series kicked off on March 25 with former Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins hockey player Dennis Bonvie introducing the movie “Miracle.” Bonvie spoke about his hockey career and the power of persist- ence, noting his own struggles on the path to becoming a better hockey player and making it to the professional hockey world. Other movies included in this public offering are: “Cinderella Man” (April 22) and “A League of Their Own” (April 29). DMS STUDENTS ADVANCE TO STATE SCIENCE OLYMPIAD COMPETITION Dallas Middle School students competed in the regional level Dennis Bonvie to attend Boy Scouts event May 8 Dennis Bonvie, formerly of the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins, will be at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre Satur- day, May 8, to support the Boy Scout’s 100th birthday and Scout-o-Rama. Bonvie will sign autographs from 1 to 3 p.m. Area Scouts will set up ex- hibits in the Kingston Armo- ry. The event is open to Scouts and to the public and will fea- ture hands-on Scouting favor- ites as well as non-traditional Scout activities. The booths will range from an archery and b.b. gun range to knot ty- ing and compass reading. In addition, there will also be paint ball sling shot, a cat- apult and bottle rockets. Camp to participate in Boston symposium William Camp, Ph.D., a pro- fessor of sociology and history at Luzerne County Community College, received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington, D.C. to participate in a symposi- um this summer in Boston, Mass. Camp will take part in the NEH Landmarks program “American History and Cul- ture.” Twenty-five individuals from across the United States have been selected to engage in intensive study and discussion on significant issues facing so- ciety. Camp earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Gordon College, his Master of Arts degree fro Fairleigh Di inson University and his docti rate from Carnegie-Mellon Uni- versity. A former Fulbright scholar to the Netherlands, he has been involved in NEH work- shops in Brandeis, Harvard and Boston universities. He resides in Dallas with his wife, Ann. The Science Olympiad is a national competition designed to test students’ knowledge and aptitude in 23 areas of science. These tests are accomplished through a variety of means, including building events and testing events. The DMS team will travel to Juniata College on April 30 to compete in the state level event. BRANDON HARDING WINS LEGION ESSAY CONTEST Brandon Harding won first place in the American Legion Essay Contest sponsored by the Dallas American Legion Post 672. Harding has been a prize winner for three years, winning the local contest as well as placing first in district competition last year. This year he was won the local, district and inter-district contests. Harding was honored at a recent Dallas Post 672 monthly meeting where he read his winning essay that dealt with the Federal Government Stimulus Plan.
