| All area students in grades 7-12 are
invited to enter the 27th Annual Su-
ne Maria Rossetti Memorial Juried
Contest.
Joe and Sue Hand of Dallas sponsor
the contest in memory of the daughter
‘of Louise and the late Peter Rossetti of
‘Saugus, MA.
All students in grades 7-12 residing
in or studying art within the geograph-
ical boundaries of the school districts
‘of Dallas, Lake-Lehman, Tunkhannock
and Northwest Area may enter the
contest.
Entries must be delivered to Sue
Hand’s Imagery, 35 Main St., Dallas,
between February 18 and February 27.
Ribbons will be awarded in 12 differ-
ent categories on each separate grade
level by two panels of three judges
each.
They will be judged separately on
each grade level in a variety of catego-
ries including pencil, pastel, watercol-
or, acrylic, oil, ink, scratchboard,
mixed media, fibers, photography,
prints, and miniature drawings and
paintings. Photographs must be at
least 8” X 10”.
No entry may exceed a total size of
40 inches in any direction. All 2-D en-
tries must be mounted or matted, or
framed (exception: works on canvas
board or stretched canvas) and must
be accompanied by an entry form avail-
able from area school art teachers or
from Sue Hand’s Imagery.
All 2-D artwork, other than matted
paper, must have a secure hanger on
the back.
Artwork must have been completed
in the last 12 months and may not have
been entered in any previous Rossetti
art contest. Each student may submit a
contest begins
total of three (3) entries.
In addition, a separate awards jury of
six artists will assign many communi-
ty-sponsored cash awards and gift cer-
tificates.
Deadline for entries is 6 p.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 27.
The public is invited to the Opening
Reception of the 27th Annual Suzanne
Maria Rossetti Memorial Juried Art
show from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday,
March 9, at the Schulman Gallery on
the campus of the Luzerne County
Community College, South Prospect
Street, Nanticoke. An awards ceremo-
ny will follow at 4 p.m.
The exhibit of winning art works
will continue through Wednesday,
March 26.

BOYD -Irene “Rene” E., 85, for-
merly of Dallas, died Friday, Janu-
ary 18, 2008 in Roanoke, Va.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was a
graduate of Meyers High School
in 1941.

Thomas C. Boyd, Bent Mountain,
Va.; and Rebecca A. Brown, Wirtz,
Va; five grandchildren; and eight
great-grandchildren.
. DUNGEY - Margaret “Peggy”
(Schwartz), 82, a lifelong resi-
dent of Shavertown, died Tues-
day, January 15, 2008 at Hospice
e of the Visiting Nurse Associ-
 H at Heritage House, Wilkes-
arre.
A graduate of Kingston Town-
ship High School, Class of 1943,
she worked at Isaac Long’s De-
partment Store in Wilkes-Barre
for many years and at the Dallas
Tool and Equipment Company.
She was a lifetime member of St.
Paul’s Lutheran Church. She was
a member of the Women’s Auxil-
iary, sang in the adult choir and
taught Sunday school when her
children were young.
Surviving are a son, Cliff, of
Beaver Creek, Ohio; daughter,
Bethanne Arner, of Wellsboro;
three granddaughters; and her
companion of 12 years, Roland
Schrader, of Glen Burnie, Md.

FARRELL - William F.,, Esq,
98, formerly of Dallas and King-
ston, died Monday, January 14,
2008.
Born January 10, 1910 in Avoca,
me was a graduate of St. Thomas
llege (University of Scranton)
and earned his Juris Doctorate
from the University of Michigan
Law School in 1937. He practiced
law in Pennsylvania and was a for-
mer member of the Bar Associ-
ations of Allegheny, Cumberland,
Lackawanna and Luzerne coun-
ties. He was admitted to practice
in the Commonwealth and Su-
preme courts of Pennsylvania and
the United States District Court.
He devoted the majority of his
professional years to advance in
both the Department of Revenue
and the Legal Division of the De-
partment of Public Welfare from
which he retired as director of le-
gal enforcement of the Common-
wealth of Pennsylvania Bureau of
Claims Settlement in 1973.
Early in his law practice, Attor-
ney Farrell volunteered to enlist
in the Department of the Navy,
serving with honor during World
War II as an officer in naval intelli-
gence. He served in Key West,
Midway, Miami and Washington,
D.C. He continued his intelli
gence work in the Naval Reserve,
fetiring as a commander in 1970
after 20 years of service.
Surviving are daughter, Do-
rothy A. Farrell, M.D., of Wyom-
ing; son, Douglas John, of Savan-
nah, Ga.; five grandchildren.
GROMAIA - Louise (Macio-
lek) Katkowski, 85, formerly of
Dupont, died Tuesday, January
15, 2008 at the Village at Green-
jar, Dallas.
Born in Duryea on December
12, 1922, she was one of 20 chil-
dren. She was a member of Sa-
cred Heart of Jesus Church, Du-
pont. Prior to retiring, she was
employed by Topps Chewing
Gum.
Surviving are her sons, Joseph
Katkowski, of Gouldsboro; and
Robert Katkowski, of Forty Fort;
daughter, Margaret, of Endicott,
N.Y.; eight grandchildren; 14
- great-grandchildren; one great-
great-grandchild; many nieces
and nephews.

HINKLEY - Raymond J., 52, of
Meshoppen, died Thursday, Ja-
nuary 17, 2008 at Mercy Hospital,
Scranton.
Born in Scranton on May 27,
1955, he was the owner of Bonnie
Manufacturing and Sales in
Springville, Pa. He graduated
from Elk Lake High School in
1974 and was a U.S. Air Force vet-
eran with the rank of sergeant.
Surviving are his wife, Clair V.
Weidow; his mother, Margaret C.
Spathelf Hinkley, of Meshoppen;
stepson, Donald S. Capron, of
New Hope, Minn.; stepdaughter,
Jennifer Pierce, of Little Rock,
Ark.; brother, Mark, of Nicholson;
sisters, Christine Phillips, of Ne-
wark Valley, N.Y., Laurie Hunsin-
ger, of Springville, Pa., Linda Bak-
er, of Owego, N.Y.; and Kathy Wis-
nosky, of Tunkhannock; 13 nieces
and nephews; eight great-nieces
and nephews; and two step-
grandchildren.

KUNEC - Ethel Decker, 89, of
Dallas, died Wednesday, January
16; 2008 at the Meadows Manor,
Dallas.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was a
graduate of James M. Coughlin
High School and the Wilkes-
Barre General Hospital School of
Nursing. She was employed for
Wilkes-Barre General Hospital as
a registered nurse until her retire-
ment.
She was a member of St. Luke’s
United Church of Christ, Wilkes-
Barre, and the Wilkes-Barre
Alumni Association of Registered
Nurses.
Surviving are cousins; broth-
ers-in-law; sisters-in law; nieces
and nephews.

ORNER -Mildred B., 92, of Dal-
las, died Saturday, January 19,
2008 at the Meadows Nursing
Center.
Born in Shamokin on August
14, 1915, she was raised in Dalma-
tia, Pa. and was a Dallas resident
since 1976. She was a member of
Trinity Presbyterian Church in
Dallas.
She was a graduate of the Hoyt
School of Practical Nursing, for-
merly of Kingston, where she
earned her degree with distin-
guished honors. She received her
license in 1953.
Surviving are her son, C. Rob-
ert Orner II; two grandsons;
niece, nephew and cousin.

of the Park Inn Cafe, Fernbrook.
She was a member of Gate of
Heaven Church, Dallas.
Surviving are daughters, Lor-
raine Dougherty, of Spotswood,
N.J.; and Judith Ganis, of Dallas;
sister, Margaret Auricchio, of
New York; four grandchildren;
seven great-grandchildren; nu-
merous nieces and nephews.

SAVAKINUS - Ludwig, 61, of
Shavertown, died Tuesday, Janu-
ary 15, 2008 at Wilkes-Barre Gen-
eral Hospital.
Born in Kingston on January 7,
1947, he was a co-owner and part-
ner of Savakinus Brothers, Lu-
zerne, for 24 years. He also
worked for Motor Twins as the
head auto painter for 18 years. He
was a member of Holy Family
Parish, Luzerne.
Surviving are his wife, the for-
mer Carol Kuchemba; daughter,
Caroline Sauers, of Rockaway,
N.J.; three grandsons; sisters, De-
lores Hospodar, of Swoyersville;
and Joan Robbins, of Wyoming;
many nieces and nephews.

early age with his parents and was
a graduate of Lake-Lehman High
School, Class of 1960. He had
been self-employed as a gardener
and handyman.

mas produce stand, Dallas, and
previously worked at Natona
Mills, Dallas. She was a member
of St. Paul's Lutheran Church,
Dallas.
