Sharon Boice Serbel, 55, of
Lehman Township, died Satur-
day April 20, 2002 at home.
Born March 1, 194%; dn Bing-
hamton, N.Y., she was a daugh-
ter of the late Oliver arid Marie
(Reed) Boice.
She attended Tunkhannock
High School and Empire Beauty
Academy. She was a mémber of
Holy Family Parish, Luzerne.
She was also a member of the
Lake Lehman Football Booster
Club and a Cheerleader Mom.
Surviving are her husband,
Steve; stepmother, Betty Boice;
daughters, Crista Oeller, Flori-
da, and Heidi Scholz, Dallas;
son, John Scholz, Mehoopany;
stepsons, Michael: Serbel,
Leighton, and Stephen Serbel,
Vero Beach, Fla.; five grand-
children; sister, Diane Morri-
son, Jenningsville; brother
Stephen Boice, Sugar Run;
stepsisters, Amy Lott, Meshop-
pen; Toni Hutcheson, Georgia;
and Susan Champion, Alaba-
ma; and nieces and nephews.

Grandson resides in Shavertown
John J. Konopka, 66, of War-
saw Street, Swoyersville, died
Tuesday April 2, 2002 in Wilkes-
Barre General Hospital. A life
resident of Swoyersville, he was
the son of the late John and
Mary (Rozmus) Konopka and at-
tended Swoyersville schools. He
was employed at United Pants,
Swoyersville, Topps Chewing
Gum, Duryea, and most recently
at Bridon American, Exeter. He
was a member of Holy Family
Parish, Luzerne. Preceding him
in death were his brother, Tony;
and a sister, Josephine Cegelka.
Surviving are his wife of 40
years, the former Pauline Brdar-
ic; son, John, and his wife, Lisa,
Swoyersville; daughter, Susan
Deeble, and her husband, Bruce;
granddaughter, Heather, and
grandson, Bruce, Shavertown;
brother, Philip Konopka, Swoy-
ersville; sisters, Caroline Rakos,
Mountaintop; Anna Stefanko,
Mary Cebrick and Nellie Zannet-
ti, all of Swoyersville; and Sophie
Patterson, Va.; numerous nieces
and nephews.

Sweet Valley resident
Gail M. Hoopengardner, 38,
the Sweet Valley section of Ross
Township, died Saturday April
20, 2002 at Mercy Hospital.
Born Aug. 1, 1963, in Wells-
boro, she was the daughter of
Shirley Merrick Bronkoski,
Kingman, Ariz; and the late
Gerald Bronkoski. She was a
1981 graduate of Wellsboro

ELIZABETH BELINE
Member of St. Therese’s Church
Elizabeth M. “Betty” Beline, 83,
of the Trucksville section of
Kingston Township, died Saturday
April 13, 2002 at home.
Born Jan. 2, 1919, in Bethlehem,
she was a daughter of the late Ja-
cob F. and Matilda E. (Schmidt)
Beline. She graduated from
Kingston Township High School
and Wilkes-Barre Business College.
She was a secretary for the Penn-
sylvania Department of Public As-
sistance and later for the Depart-
ment of Veterans Affairs Medical
Center, Wilkes-Barre, from which
she retired. She was a lifetime
member of St. Therese’s Church,
the Shavertown section of Kingston
Township, where she was active in
its Altar and Rosary Society,
Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality, Re-
new small group, senior citizens
group, and choir. She also was a
volunteer candy striper nurses aid
for Nesbitt Memorial Hospital,
Kingston. She volunteered for
Meals on Wheels and helped with
recreation for elderly sisters at Col-
lege Misericordia, Dallas Township.
She was preceded in death by her
sister, Mildred B. Devlin; and
brother, Frank. Surviving are her
sister, Mary Helen Russell, Lehigh-
ton; and three nieces: Ann Marie
Poepperling, Carol Keen, and Cyn-
thia Nashett, three grand nieces:
Rachael and Rebecca Nashett,
Jacqueline Devlin Perry, six
nephews: James, John and Jerry
Devlin, Robert, Michael and Gerry
Russell. Eleven grand nephews:
James, Louis and John Devlin,
Bryon and Cody Poepperling,
Robert, Neal, Christopher, Eric,
Gregory and Mark Russell. In lieu
of flowers, memorial donations may
be made to St. Therese’s Church.

Eugenia “Jean” Sweitzer, 87, of
Deer Park Road, Lehman Town-
ship, and formerly of Idetown,
died Sunday April 21, 2002 at
home.
Born in Plymouth, she was a
daughter of the late Paul and An-
tonia (Babetski) Zielinski. She
graduated from Hanover Town-
ship High School. She was a
member of Idetown United
Methodist Church and its Cou-
ples Club. She was also a mem-
ber of the Lake Lehman Band
Sponsors. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Albert H.,
Sr.; sisters, Mary Loughlin and
Connie Johns; and brothers,
John and Alphonso.
Surviving are her son Albert
H., Jr., with whom she resided;
four grandchildren; eight great-
grandchildren; and sister Irene
Baron, Plains Township. Memori-

Ann M. Zekas, of Hemlock
Street, Dallas, died Thursday
April 18, 2002 at Kingston Com-
mons.
Born and raised in Ed-
wardsville, she was a daughter of
the late Peter and Mary Matusav-
age Zekas. She lived in Kingston
and Luzerne before moving to
Dallas in 1942. She attended Ed-
wardsville schools. She was a
member of St. Therese’s Church,
the Shavertown section of
Kingston Township. She was pre-
ceded in death by her husband,
Joseph; daughter, Patricia Zekas;
grandson, Thomas J. Jr.; and
great-grandson, Robert.
Surviving are her sons,
Joseph, South Plainfield, N.J.;
Thomas, Forty Fort; Lawrence,
Dallas; Ronald, Shavertown;
daughter, Mary Ann Swayze,
Shavertown; 13 grandchildren;

Lake, died Tuesday April 9, 2002
at Geisinger Wyoming Valley
Medical Center, Plains Township.
Born Feb. 21, 1936 in Nanti-
coke, he was the son of the late
Joseph and Sarah (Nedwick)
Zoltewicz. He was a 1954 gradu-
ate of Nanticoke High School and
attended Wilkes College, the U.S.
Army Management Engineering
College, Rock Island, Ill., and the
U.S. Army Logistics Management
Center, Fort Lee, Va. Before retir-
ing in 1993, he worked for the
Tobyhanna Army Depot for 28
years, first in the Force Develop-
ment Division as a management
analyst and later as a an MIS
specialist for Darcom USSA Divi-
sion. He was a member of Holy
Trinity Church, Nanticoke, Na-
tional Association of Retired Fed-
eral Employees, Knights of
Columbus, Third Degree Council
THEODORE HUGHES

Theodore D. Hughes, 64, of
Harveys Lake, died Saturday
April 20, 2002 at home.
Born July 20, 1937, in New
York City, he was the son of the
late Theodore R. and Cora
(Dierolf) Hughes. He was a 1955
graduate of Manhattan High
School of Aviation Trade and at-
tended Suffolk County Commu-
nity College, Long Island, N.Y.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of
the Korean War. For 34 years,
he worked at Pan American Air-
lines at JFK International Air-
port, New York City, and then
for six years at United Express
Airlines, Newburg, N.Y. He re-
tired two years ago. le was a
member of Our Lady of Victory
Church. He was also a member
of the Harveys Lake Rod and
Gun Club and American Legion
Post 967, Harveys Lake.
Surviving are his wife of 39
years, the former Roberta
Roberts; son, Theodore R., Se-
tauket, N.Y.; daughters, Lisa
Field, Blackwood, N.J.; Molly
Company, Shavertown section of
Kingston Township; and Megan,
Mystic, Conn.; and six grand-
children. In lieu of flowers,

cuse. She was a member of St.

tee woman and a member of the

preceded in death by her hus-
band, Edward F.; son, Steven
E.; and brother, Charles.
