Frank Lipski, Jackson Township, with the elk he downed in Elk County during the first Pennsylvania elk hunt in 70 years. Local hunter bags elk q One of the chosen few who got a chance to hunt reintroduced animals By RONALD BARTIZEK Post Staff JACKSON TWP. - Frank Lipski con- siders himself a fortunate man. The long-time hunter, “too long” he re- sponds when asked how many years he’s been chasing wildlife with a gun, won the lottery. Not a game that pays millions of dollars, but one that gave him the opportunity to join 29 other hunters for the first Pennsylvania elk season in 70 years. “I just got lucky,” Lipski said of his good fortune. His name was drawn out of about 50,000 applications for the week-long season that started Novem- ber 12, and he was one of 27 hunters to actually bag an elk. Lipski spotted the cow, which was es- timated at 485 pounds live weight, near the end of the first day. After trudging over hill and dale checking out loca- tions, he was almost ready to call it a day. His guide, Bob Decker, suggested one last look near a stream bed, and as dL grad is field nockey star Former Lake-Lehman field hockey standout Colleen Mahon has been named the MAC Free- dom Conference Rookie of the Year. Unable to see the elk clearly, Lipski waited for a better look, but when none came squeezed off a round from his 30-year-old .308. “If it was a deer, a hit would have knocked it over,” Lipski said, but the elk remained still. It moved into clearer view after a few minutes, and he was able to see blood coming from a wound. Decker told him to hit it again, Lipski fired, and this time the elk took a cou- ple of steps and then collapsed. A clos- er look revealed that the first shot had cut through both lungs and exited the elk’s carcass. After field dressing the animal, Lipski and Decker headed to the check-in sta- tion, only to arrive 15 minutes after closing. That wasn’t a problem,he said, because Game Commission personnel went out of their way to assist the hunters, in this case taking a team of people and equipment out to bring in the carcass, which was about 600 See ELK, pg 10 Harding, Urzen lead team to close victory 17 added 3 points and Mark Rondi- was led by Scott Skammer and A.J.
