Amy Lennon, of the 7th grade, was answerable for the pie face of Mrs. Harrison. She said she was chosen as a pie thrower because she had good manners, while Bethany Daron, 8th grade, claimed she was chosen because of her status on the yearbook staff, before she too ate humble pie. It ended 30 minutes later in a free for all, with everyone getting a share of the pie. The scent of minty shaving cream filled the air—and the floor, and the hair, and—well, shaving cream pie was everywhere. The afternoon of fun began with a faculty/student basketball game. Students lined the bleachers holding hastily crafted signs high, urging on their fellow students. As the disc jockey played loud music in the breaks between the play periods, Ryan Milford, son of gym teacher Skip Milford, refereed the game and claimed the students fouled the faculty most often. Play between the teams was hot and heavy. At a score of 77 to 58 in favor of the faculty, the game was prema- turely halted when Mrs. Maryann Belles, Learning Support teacher wearing the fated number 13 on her jersey, came down hard and wrong on her ankle. Amid cries of “Go get Regina!” school nurse Mod- rosky came running with ice. Relieved students gave Belles a rousing standing ovation as she was carried by stretcher to the ambulance and taken to Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre. Like many other famed athletes, Mrs. Belles suffered a severed Achilles tendon, for which she underwent surgery Saturday at Mercy Hospital. She will be out of the classroom for several weeks of recuper- ation. Principal Glogowski assured the students Mrs. Belles would want them to carry on and have a good time, which they did, easy as pie. One young male student was overheard in the hallway, holding Mrs. Belles responsible for the students’ loss of the basketball game. The Builders Club at Lake-Lehman Middle Level Educa- tion Building knows that doing for others is as American as mom's apple pie. The organization raised $2,000 for the United Way selling patriotic T-shirts and collected $1,180 for the American Red Cross disaster relief fund following the Sept. 11 tragedy.
