Lipski was hunting on one of
the 12 elk management areas in
the western part of the state.
Unfamiliar with the territory, he
contracted with Decker, a for-
mer Game Commission employ-
ee, at $100 a day, a bargain
compared to some guides who
were charging up to $550 a day
with a three-day minimum.
The hunters and guides were
required to attend a half-day in-
formation session Nov. 11, at
which Game Commission per-
sonnel carefully described the
rules of the hunt, emphasizing
that they preferred only adult
animals be taken.
Lipski and four other hunters
were in Elk County; he took his
elk in the Johnson Run area of
Benezette Township at 4:50
p.m., . 10 minutes before the
close of the hunting day. By
week's end, the other
hunters had also been success-
ful.

a herd estimated at nearly 700.
Lipski said the largest buck was
taken with a bow. In the past
year, 30 elk have been taken il-
legally and another 31 have
been killed by farmers claiming
crop devastation.
Back home, Lipski spent Mon-
day and Tuesday chasing deer
in the woods around Bradford
County. “I passed on a small doe
Monday, and that was the only
one I saw,” he said.
But it didn’t seem to matter
when he thought about the elk
steaks and stew he would enjoy
all winter.

Back Mt. Soccer indoor soccer forming
Teams are now being sought for the winter 2002 indoor soccer
league held at the Penn State Lehman Gymnasium by the Back
Mountain Youth Soccer Association. Teams from U-8 and up will be
considered at a fee of $4 per team. The league runs from January 4,
2002 to March 10, 2002 with play on weekends only. Deadline for

Lady Knights hold basketball camp
The Lake-Lehman Lady Knights basketball team recently held its fourth annual basketball camp under
the direction of head coach Rob Wilson. Forty three girls from 4th thru 8th grade attended this years
camp. The campers were given instruction in passing, dribbling, shooting, defense, and game experi-
ence. All girls were treated to a camp t-shirt and prizes were awarded to the wining team. Assisting
coach Wilson were, Danielle Kern, Kari Maskalis, Jackie Paul, Kim Jones, Casey Horvath, Tricia
Coombs, Asst. Coach Barry Horvath, Asst. Coach Bill Boyle, and 6th grade coach Mike Carey.

Geisinger offers free hockey clinic
Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hu-
man -Motion Institute will spon-
sor a free hockey clinic on Sun-
day, Dec. 2, with 90-minute
clinics from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30
p.m. at The Ice Box, Rt. 315 in
Pittston Township. The focus of
the event will be on safety and
equipment education, training
tips to avoid injury, and skating,
shooting and stick skills. Mem-
bers of the Wilkes-Barre /Scran-
ton Penguins will give hands-on
instruction to participants. The
clinic is available to youth hock-
ey players, ages 6 through 18,
and space is limited. Free water
bottles and other prizes will be
- given to registered participants.
All participants must be accom-
panied by a parent, guardian or
