Man fights cops in escape try By GRACE R. DOVE Post Staff JACKSON TOWNSHIP - Crimi- nal charges against a Noxen man went from bad to worse after he attacked two police officers last Thursday. While being fingerprinted be- fore a preliminary hearing on an assault charge that stemmed from adomesticdispute, Edward Engle- man punched and scuffled with two police officers, tried to escape from them and now faces felony charges. According to Jackson Town- ship assistant chiefJerry Leedock, Lake Township chief John Mas- loski was using his station to fin- gerprint Engleman before taking him for a preliminary hearing before District magistrate James Tupper. “Masloski had removed Engle" man's handcuffs and was finger- printing him in the other room, when I heard Masloski yell,” Leedock said. “When I looked in, Masloski was lying on the floor and Engleman was on his way out the door.” Engleman ran towards the woods behind the police station, where Leedock tackled him. As he doubled back toward Huntsville Road after punching Leedock in the chest, Masloski sprayed Engle- man with pepper Mace. “He got a face full of the stuff and it didn't affect him at all,” Leedock said. It took three officers - Mas- loski, Lehman Township patrol- man Sev Newberry and Dallas & Borough police chief Jack Fowler ~to get ahandcufffed and shack- led Englemah ‘into’ the cruiser, ‘ Masloski said. Engleman refused treatment, Leedock said. DOVE Post Staff DALLAS - When Ralph Greco and a friend offered $500 to a Dallas patrolman to drop a DUI charge, they thought he wouldn't refuse it. Patrolman William Norris did, and arrested Greco and James Barto for conspiracy to commit bribery and bribery of a public official. Greco waived his right to a preliminary hearing on both charges June 9 before District Magistrate James Tupper. An additional charge of driving under a suspended license was: dropped when police ‘learned Grecohad an occupational license which allows him to drive to and from work. The bribery charges stemmed from his arrest March 24, when Norris arrested Greco for driving while under the influence (DUIJ) Greco's friend, Mike Barto, al- legedly tried to get Norris and police chief Jack Fowler to drop the DUI charges by offering Norris $500, taking candy to Fowler's mother and telling the officers “money is no object.” Barto was bound over to Luzerne County court after a preliminary hearing May 10.
