School Merit Scholarship.
Melissa Howell wins Seminary scholarship
Melissa Howell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Howell, Dallas,
recently was named a recipient of the Wyoming Seminary Lower
This academic merit scholarship is presented by Wyoming Seminary
annually to two new students in grades 5 through 8 who excel in a
written examination and an interview with the dean of the Lower
School.

Nathan Santos awarded
music scholarship to Miami
Nathan Santos has been
awarded full tuition scholarship
to the University of Miami, Coral
Gables, Florida, beginning the Fall
semester 1992. He will be pursu-
ing a master’s degree in jazz stu-
dio studies with concentration on
private study in string bass and
electric bass.
__. Nathanisa 1988 graduate from
Wyoming Valley West High School
with awards in band and choral
competitions. He attended Wilkes
University and graduated with a
bachelor's of art in music per-
formance, magna cum laude.
Santos is well-known for pro-
fessional music activities in the
Wyoming Valley, having been so-
loist for the Wyoming Valley Ora-
torio Society, Scranton Singer's
Guild and the tenor soloist at First
Presbyterian Church in Wilkes-
Barre. More recently, he has been
performing with the Cincopella
NATHAN SANTOS
Singers. For the last five summers
he has served on the staff of En-
core Music Camp. Nathan is the
son of Professor Rosendo and
Reverend Harriet Santos.
James Donnelly awarded
Wilkes journalism scholarship
Wilkes University junior, James
Donnelly of Hanover Township, has
been awarded the ThomasdJ. Moran
Scholarship in Journalism.
Donnelly, recently received an
associate degree in communica-
tion from Luzerne County Com-
munity College. Son of Maureen
and the late Robert Donnelly of
Harveys Lake, he hopes to pursue
a career in one of the many com-
munications fields.
Endowed by a $50,000 gift from
The Capital Cities Foundation and
the Time Leader, the Scholarship
is given to a graduate of Luzerne
County Community College inter-
ested in continuing his or her
education at Wilkes University.
Nine students at Penn State
Wilkes-Barre were honored by the
Student Government Association
for outstanding club membership
at the campus. The Outstanding
Club Member Awards are pre-
sented annually at the Annual
Leadership Awards ceremony to
those members in each organiza-
tion who have contributed above

Sandra Weyman
participates in
writing program
Area school teachers gathered
recently for the Summer Writing
Institute, an intensive workshop
for selected teachers of writing from
all grade levels, to learn, think and
renew their commitment to educa-
tion. The participants were
awarded six graduate credits from
Wilkes University.
Sandra Weyman of the Lake
Lehman School District was among
the participants in the Institute,
part of the Northeast Pennsylva-
nia Writing Project. The teachers
met four days a week for three
weeks to discuss current composi-
tion theory, research and editing.
They also made presentations and
participated in writing/editing
response groups.

Reading Is Fundamental readers at Ross Elementary
The students of the Ross Elementary School participated in the Reading Is Fundamental program
during the-school year. This literacy program was coordinated by Mrs. Nancy Walters, remedial
teacher, and Mrs. Evelyn Weaver, PTO chairperson. Each student received three books throughout
the year. With each book, every student received an assignement to complete. The students who
were selected as 1992 R.1.F. Readers are those who completed all three assignments. They were
awarded a certificate from R.I.F. and a food certificate from McDonald's Restaurants during the
annual Awards Day program held recently at the school. The 1992 R.I.F. Readers are as follows:
