By CHARLOT M. DENMON - Staff Writer Both Dallas and Lake-Lehman School Districts have a wide vari- ety of athletic and sports programs for the high school students, and coaches of both schools are look- ing forward to working with some outstanding male and female ath- letes from last school year as well ‘as some new ones moving up into ‘high school. ‘The fall sports programs are the same in both districts, although ‘the number of students sometimes places one sport or another in dif- ferent divisions within the Wyo- ming Valley High School Confer- Lake-Lehman Coach Rich Gor- gone again this season hopes to “have a strong football program despite losing some outstanding athletes through graduation. Girls field hockey coach Jean Lipski always fields a strong team and has a fine group of young i athletes returning this season. One “Trudy Wandel was holding first place going into the eliminations in sophomore ladies figures and tied for third in the finals. The judges broke the tie by checking individual scoring and, as a result, Trudi finished fourth. I was pleased, however, since fourth in the coun- try from among hundreds ofskaters is excellent,” Berger said. of the newest and rapidly develop- ing into one of the most popular sport is soccer and Ray Dennis is planning to keep his team in strong contention in the league again as they were last season. Bob Rogers who coaches the girls volleyball team, comes through with a competitive team every year and hopes to do the same this year and golf coach Mike Sharok has a dedicated group of golfers returning this season. At Dallas, football coach Ted Jackson has had a championship team for the past two seasons and despite losing 18 starters through graduation has replaced them with younger players and is working hard at putting another competi- tive team on the field against the school’s competition. Soccer Coach John McCafferty and his assistant is hoping to re- cruit new players this season to replace those seniors he lost by graduation .McCafferty has arepu- tation for fielding a highly com- petitive group of athletes. He also said that Lisa finished eighth after the eliminations in figures and Manzoni, who entered the national competition for the first time, finished 15th in the sophomore men’s figures. Wandel finished 12th in free style skating despite having in- jured her back the week prior to leaving for the competition. - High schools provide plenty of sports opportunities Girls field hockey coach Robyn Jones has completed her Master's program and will be back to coach the girls toa winning season. Coach Sara Jane Griffen will be back to coach the girls interested in volley- ball. Golf Coach Tom Kilduff will continue to develop the Dallas golf team which has always been a strong sport at Dallas and head Coach William Kvashay hopes to have some strong runners come out for cross country to try to match last year's team which took the district championship and placed second in state competi- tion. He is also hoping for greater numbers of athletes to come out for the girls cross country team. Whether the two teams stand- ings count in the league standings when they compete against one another, it proves to be an exciting performance for the fans since on the athletic field the students are keen rivals despite being friends the rest of the time.
