Chris Ball went the dis- tance for Beaumont limiting the hard hitting Cardinals to four hits. Ben Patton led the attack with three hits including adouble. Dave Konopke chipped in with two hits while Joel Weiss added a double. Jason Wagner played a solid game in centerfield. ASTROS UPSET DODGERS 6-5 The Astros also pulled off a first round upset by downing the ‘Dodgers 6-5. Shawn Spencer picked up the win with seven innings of two hit relief. Spencer entered the game in the first after . the Dodgers put four runs on the board and he limited the Dodgers to only one run the rest of the way. Billy Vigorito paced the Astros with two hits including a double. Matt Cadwalader also had a pair of hits. Rocky Vigorito, who played an excellent third base, knocked in the winning run with a double. Tim Norconk turned in several nice plays at second base. Brian Miller and Sean Shovlin rapped out two hits each for the Dodgers. ASTROS WIN 11-10 SLUGFEST FOR TITLE The playoff champ was decided in a see-saw battle between the Astros and Beaumont with the Astros pulling out the victory with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to squeek by Beaumont with an 11-10 win. Dave Oatridge had two hits including a triple to knock in the winner. Matt Cadwalader had two hits including a home run while Billy Vigorito had a pair of hits. Shawn Spencer picked up the win out of the bullpen. Defensively, catcher Oatridge and rightfielder Brian ‘Llewellyn played well. Chris Ball paced Beaumont with three hits including a double. Ben Patton had two hits including a triple. Frank Novajosky also had two hits while Dave Konopke drilled a home run. Left fielder Brian Hettershimer and shortstop Patton played excellent defense. Congratulations to Astro man- ager Al Martin and his assistant Chip Sorber for an outstanding coaching job. Beaumont manager Bill Patton and his assistants Joe Ball and Francis Novajosky also did an excellent job this season. Coach Robin Cummins has announced the selection of sen- iors Kim Rinehimer of Shaver- town and Kate Tigue of Avoca as co-captains of the King's College Lady Monarchs basketball team. Rinehimer enters the new campaign with a 3.9 GPA and is a major in medical technology. She started the week with King's internship program at three Scranton hospitals. ~The Dallas High School gradu- ate is in her fourth season with the Lady Monarchs. In 17 games as a junior, she averaged 3.29 points per contest. Missing part of the campaign due to a leg injury affected her scoring po- tential. DENMON Staff Writer Hanover Little League team defeated the Back Mountain Ameri- can All Stars 4-1 last Wednesday to knock the local boys out of the losers bracket finals. Despite pitcher Jeff Kunkle's giving up only five hits and striking out six, Hanover took advantage of major Back Mountain errors to score the win. They took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when their rightfielder went to firston an error and the next man up, first base- man C. Siene walked sending his teammate to second. He scored when the third man in the inning hit Kunkle’s first pitch for a single to send right- fielder Maciejascak home. With none out, Kunkle cooled offand after walking the next man, got the next man to hit into a forced play at home plate. The next two Hanover boys were out when one hit a pop fly to second and the third struck out. The Americans tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning Football physicals will be given Monday, Aug. 7, at 8:30 a.m. in the nurse's office; cross country, cheer- leading, and girls’ field hockey physicals will be given Wednes- day, Aug. 9, at 8:30 a.m. in the nurse's office. Carlo Santarelli was the next man up for the Back Mountain team but before he swung, DeFrancesco drew a throw from Hanover's » catcher and Gingo stole home. Hanover scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth when the Americans broke down. With only one out, Bonavino walked then went to second on a wild pitch. Bill Weidner walked then the Ameri- cans’ rightfielder missed a high fly and two runs scored. A third run scored on an error at second to give Hanover their 4-1 lead. The Americans rallied in the fifth inning with a single and a walk but they were putdown when a double steal was squelched at home plate. DENMON Staff Writer Nanticoke edged the Back Mountain 2-1 in the American Legion playoffs last Wednesday at the Swoyersville field. The loss eliminated Back Mountain, while Nanticoke continued. The Back Mountain team took a first inning 1-0 lead in the game behind pitcher Randy Coolbaugh, on a single by Todd Sallo who went to second on a groundout by Rob Michaels and scored when Keith Schultz tapped out a single. Nanticoke scored a run in the third to tie the game at 1-1, on an Myerses win The Harveys Lake Yacht Club held its regular Sunday Series sailboat race on July 23. The race was held in moderate to windless conditions. The course was a modified Olympic with windward- leeward segments. Four Comets and one Phantom completed the race with the following results posted by Frank Wadas, Race Committee Chairman: 1st place, Dr. Fred Myers and Diane as crew; 2nd place, Jack C. Barnes and Charles Wasserott V, crew; 3rd place, Jcan Williams and Mary Carrano, crew. The Sunday Series race on July 30 will be held at 11 a.m. with skippers meeting at 10:30 a.m. error, a groundout in the infield and a single to send a runner home. The score remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the seventh inning when designated hitterJ. Kashutus led off the inning with a single and with two down was able to score on an error in the infield to give his Nanticoke team a 2-1 edge, enough to win the game. Coolbaugh pitched the full seven innings giving up only four hits and striking out seven, walking only one. Nanticoke's pitcher Rich Baron gave up only four hits and struck out three while walking two. It was the errors that decided the game. - Sunday race This change was necessitated by the heavy motorboat traffic on the lake. The Harveys Lake Yacht Club + will hold its annual Shipwreck Dinner-dance at the Club House on Saturday, July 29. The event will start with a social hour at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. catered by Peking Chef. Music will be pro- vided by Brother John. Matt Beech drives 'em long Matthew Beech , grandson of Janet and Chuck Beech, former residents of Shavertown, was a participant in the National Long Drive contest held recently. Beech was one of 27 golfers to reach the semifinals. Beech, who lives in the Virginia Beach, Virginia, drove a ball 295 yards into a headwind estimated at 20 miles per hour.
