Two Penn State standouts
receive student-athlete awards
Two Penn State Wilkes-Barre
sophomores, John P. Kuderka,
Falls, and Kimberly A. Weidner,
Lehman, were honored with spe-
cial athletic awards presented at
an awards ceremony held recently
at the campus in Lehman.
Kuderka received the Kolesar
Athletic Award, given annually to

Presidential Physical Fitness Winners
Nine of 180 fourth, fifth and sixth grade Lake-Noxen Elementary students qualified for the 1988-1989
Presidential Physical Fitness Awards achieving 85 percent or higher in six tests including the 50-yard
dash, mile run, standing broad jump, sit-ups, pull-ups (boys), flexed arm hang (girls) and shuttle run.

Cardinals win 'Battle of the Unbeatens'

In Teeners action last week, the
Cardinals knocked off the Astros
12-2 in a battle of the unbeatens.
DonnyJames, Jeff Malakand Ernie
Chamberlain combined to limit the
Astros to four hits. James led the
Cards with four hits including a
double. Malak added three hits
including a triple. Eric Stogoski
had a pair of doubles while Rich
Davis chipped in with two hits.
Chuck Finn, Jason McDade and
Mike Sholtis tallied three runs
each. The Astros were paced by
Dave Oatridge who scored both
runs.

In other action the Dodgers
defeated the White Sox 12-9. Pitch-
ers Tony Finarelli and Brian Miller
combined for the win. Neil Kaiser
paced the strong Dodger attack
going 3-3 with a triple. Matt Bogdon
had two hits as did Miller. Miller
and Finarelli each stroked a double
for the Dodgers. Leading the White
Sox with two hits each were Marc
Barbose and Bob Casterline. Hugo
Selenski chipped in with a double.
The Yankees won their first game
by downing the White Sox 8-1
behind the three hit pitching of
Dave Fisher. The Yankees aided
Fisher by playing flawless defense.
Jefl Dover had a double for the
Yanks. The White Sox were led by
Hugo Selinski's triple.

Legion team moved their record to
3-0 Monday when they rallied to

overcome the Back Mountain's 6-

Staufler went in to run for Bitten-
bender and crossed home plate on
a double by catcher Jamie Morris.
Bob Hough came in as a desig-
nated hitter and sent Morris to
third on a sacrifice bunt.
Brad Hontz got on base with an
intentional walk and Rich Hynick
took base on a walk. With the score
tied at 6-6, Spencer walked to force
in the winning run and end the
game.
Keith Schultz had 2-for-4 for
the local nine and Rob Michaels hit
a two-run single for the Back
Mountain in the second inning.
Michaels went 3-for-4 at the plate
and sodid Chris Engle. Ray Russin
went 1-for-1 at the plate but scored
two runs for the Back Mountain
taking base once on a hit and once
on a walk.
The Back Mountain team moved
to 1-2 in the league.
Dodgers 10-2. Donny James picked
up the victory with a five hit, 12
strikeout performance. Rich Davis,
Chuck Finn and Mike Sholtis had
two hits each for the Cards. Emie
Chamberlain and Finn had
doubles. Pat Joyce and Neil Kaiser
had two hits apiece for the Dodg-
ers. One of Kaiser's hits was a
double. The Cardinals took the
lead for good in the bottom of the
fourth, when Shawn Kelly deliv-
ered a clutch two run single.

by Penn State Professor of Engi-
neering John Kolesar.
Weidner received the H. Edward
Kaminski Memorial Scholarship
Award for superior academic
achievement, athletic ability, lead-
ership and character. The award
was established by Betsy Kaminski
in memory of her husband, a 1974
graduate of Penn State Wilkes-
Barre.
A magna cum laude graduate of
Wyoming Area High School, Kud-
erka, is a dean's list electrical
engineering student at Penn State.
He was captain of the campus
volleyball team for two years; presi-
dent of the Penn State Wilkes-
Barre Campus Honor Society;
recording secretary of Tau Beta Pi,
the engineering honor society, and
recipient of academic scholarships.
Weidner graduated from Lake-
Lehman High School where she
made the honor society and let-
tered in three sports and band. At
Penn State, she has earned letters
in softball and volleyball, was
captain of the varsity softball team
for two years and was co-captain of
the varsity volleyball team. She
has also been a dean's list student
and served as a peer tutor.
