LCCC nursing grads will be honored
Members of the graduating
nursing class at Luzerne County
Community College will be hon-
ored at the annual Nursing Gradu-
ation Breakfast which is sched-
uled for Sunday morning, May 21,
at 9:30 a.m., at Gus Genetti’'s in
Wilkes-Barre.
The college's nursing depart-
ment will recognize the graduates
and their family and friends dur-
ing a program which will include
remarks by college president Tho-
mas J. Moran; Dr. William Camp,
provost; and Dr. Ann M. Williams,
dean of arts and sciences. Intro-
ductions will be made by Thomas
P. Leary, dean of admissions and
student services; Cheryl Schell and
John Mullen, graduating students,
will offer Invocation and Benedic-
tion respectively.
Ruth Seeherman, director of the
LCCC nursing program, will pro-
vide the welcome and the presen-
tation of the faculty academic
award; and Dr. Sharon Hudacek,
assistant director of nursing, and
Mary Gavenonis, nursing instruc-
tor, will present the graduating
class. Nursing instructors Ann
Isaacs and Jane Brown will pres-
ent the class with the nursing pins;
and Peggy Sosnak, nursing instruc-
tor and Nursing Forum advisor,
will make a special presentation to
the graduates.
James Sheridan, president of
the Nursing Forum and graduat-
ing student, will also offer some
remarks on behalf of the class.
Music selections for the program
are being arranged by Arthur F.
McCormick and Ruth Sweger.
Dallas PTO focuses on environment
The Dallas Elementary PTO
invited all parents, teachers and
students to the Spring Member-
ship meeting which was held on
May 5 at 7:15 p.m. at the Dallas
Elementary School. The agenda
included the announcement of the
officer of the PTO for the 1989-
1990 school year and an evening of
“Environmental Awareness in Your
Own Backyard.” Speakers included
Mr. Wayne Hughes, Dallas Sr. High
School Environmental Educator
and Ms. Angela Wassel, Frances
Slocum State Park Naturalist. Ms.
Lucy Callahan, kindergarten
teacher at Dallas Elementary acted
as games coordinator for the chil-
dren during the presentation.
The purpose of the presentation
was to make adults and children
aware and understand the impor-
tance of their natural environment.
Information was available on the
“Hands On" programs scheduled
for the summer at Frances Slocum
State Park and ideas which will
stimulate positive attitudes toward
wildlife and the environment we
share. The Back Mountain com-
munities are the focus of increas-
ing developmental pressures. The
concern over this fact prompted
the Dallas Elementary PTO to

sponsor the Awareness Program.
Games were planned to encour-
age youngsters and their parents
and teachers to become individu-
ally motivated to do their share in
lessening environmental problems
and improving their personal envi-
ronmental backyards.
The following officers of the PTO
for the 1989-1990 school year were
announced: They are: President,
Nancy Barnard; Vice President,
Sandy Sprau; Second Vice Presi-
dent, Ruth Tetschner; Secretary,
Lynn Fleming; Treasurer, Diane

Associate degrees were conferred
on 64 candidates at commence-
ment exercises at Penn State
Wilkes-Barre May 12. Four addi-
tional students returned to the
Wilkes-Barre campus to receive
bachelor degrees.
Top student honors went to
Christopher Trusky, a surveying
technology major, who graduated
with Highest Distinction Honors.
Trusky also received the Pennsyl-
vania Land Surveyors Society
Award.
Highest Distinction Honors went
to Andrew Breazeale, Shavertown,
electrical engineering technology;
electrical engineering technology.
Student Paul Mehl, Shavertown,
biomedical technology; and Scott
A. Pearson; Sweet Valley, electri-
cal engineering technology; gradu-
ated with Distinction Honors.

Tau Alpha Pi honorary engineer-

At their annual Installation and
Awards Banquet, the Back Moun-
tain Jaycees named John J. Jab-
lowski, Jr. as the “Jaycee of the
Year.” Each year the Jaycees se-
lect a member who has, through
his or her leadership and organ-
izational skills, given exceptional
service to the community and
chapter.
Jablowski, who was recently
elected as President of the Back
Mountain club has served as
Management Vice-President and
has successfully coordinated many
of the organizations community
activities and fund raising efforts.
Prior to joining the Back Mountain
~ Jaycees, Jablowski was an active
leader in the Clarion Area Jaycees,
a top ranked chapter in Pennsyl-
vania. ;
A resident of Hanover Town-
ship, Jablowski is also an active
firefighter with the Newtown Vol-
unteer Fire Company. He serves

Dr. James Ryan, campus ex-
ecutive officer, presided over the

chairman of the campus Advisory

Kanjorski gave the commencement
address.

1988 Advisory Board Outstanding
Community. Leadership ‘Award
gave the charge to the graduates.
Following the conferring of de-
grees, JoAnn C. Post, president of
the campus Alumni Society, deliv-

leyer of Dallas include Joe Rub-
bico of Shavertown who was hon-
ored as the “Outstanding Officer of
the Year” and Steve Steltz of Shick-
shinny who received the “Rookie of
the Year” award. The “Project of
the Year” was the successful Fall
Fair Stand chaired by Frank Mor-
gan of Dallas and John Jablowski
of Hanover Township. District
Director Donna Cupinski of Dallas
was also honored for her service to
the local chapters.
The Back Mountain Jaycees are
a community oriented leadership
training organization that is open
to men and women between the
ages of 21 and 40. The Jaycees
meet the first Tuesday of every
month at the Castle Inn, Rt. 415
