(C.M. Denmon Photo) g Dallas track teams plan for successful campaigns By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer Dallas High has 40 boys and 30 girls out for this year’s track teams, and head coach Bill Strait- iffis looking for another good year. “Last year the boys were 14-1 and we won the districts, I'm hoping we do as well or better this year,” Straitiff said. “Weather will be our biggest challenge.” Straitiff explained that the Dallas girls are young, with alot of sophomores, but also said that they have some returning letter- men who will form a good nucleus for the team. On the boys' team, Straitiff and his assistants William Kvashay and Steve Kaschenbach are ex- pecting a good nucleus of seniors returning from last year includ- ing, Hugh Mundy; Walter Fader, Jared Samuels, Jim Evans, dis- tance runners; Chris Lesjak, Ron Post, Jerry Ogurkis, Shawn Ruth, John Aston, Jim Farrell, John Green, Jim Newell, Jamie Strange, Kurt Lapinski and Jim O'Donnell. Juniors on the roster include Mark Chappel, Loren Dymond, Mike Harris, Sam Jayne, Barry Miller and Wade Post. The remaining athletes are sophomores and are pushing the upper classmen for positions on the team. “We are pleased with the work we are getting from the boys and if they keep it up, we should be in good shape,” Straitiff said. “The girls are also showing some good potential and we are looking to- ward a better year this season. “Returning are Ann Balonis, Courtney Butler, Lori Cave, Lisa Hite, Amy Rosentel, Lori and Andrea Ankenbrand, and Shelly Terscavage, seniors; Jennifer Besecker, Jean Novitsky, Sherry Terescavage, juniors; -and Gretchen Schuler, who ran as a freshman is returning. These girls have had experience. Then we have a lot of good sophomores who are showing potential.” The Mountaineers drop to Divi- sion AA this season but Straitiff does not see this making a big difference, since four of seven of their opponents were near the top last season and some have dropped down the same as the Mountain- eers did. Lake-Lehman, Meyers, G.A.R., Hanover, Bishop Hoban and Crestwood are in Division AA and Coach Straitiffexpected their teams to be tough. “Itshould be an interesting year,” Straitiff said. “My coaching staff has been working hard with the kids and they say the kids are doing a good job. They are a young, dedicated group and they have been doing some hard work for us." Coach Steve Kaschenbach works with the jumpers, Coach William Kvashay works with the distnce runners, Coach Mary Ann Walsh works with the throwers and Coach Straitiff fills in wher- ever needed as well as supervising the entire team. DENMON Staff Writer The Dallas Mountaineers base- ball team of last season, whose record was 5-10, was a relatively young team and this year, with added experience, their goal is to finish above .500. Anything better than that will be icing on the cake, according to the Mounts Coach Jack Wolensky. “We have 25 candidates out for the team this year,” Wolensky said. “We lost some good starters from last season, but we have intense competition among the boys this season. We have some good ath- letes, but we are the smallest AAA school in the division. This will be our last year in AAA, next year we drop down to AA,” Wolensky ex- plained. Returning from last year are seniors Randy Coolbaugh, pitcher and first baseman; Brett Weyman, first and outfield; Harry Schwep- penheiser, outfielder; Tony Suggs, second; Andy Prebola, pitcher. Also returning are juniors Bob Ashworth, first; John Masley, outfield; Jeff Tinner, third base or shortstop; Brett Gauntlett, pitcher; Mike Williams, outfielder; Dave Grundowski, catcher; Alex Case, first base; and Mark Paczewski, outfielder. The Mountaineers have depth although many of their players are young. In addition to those above there are Paul Bednar, outfielder; Sean Hoyt, outfield; Barry Brutko, outfielder; Neil Kaiser, catcher; Matt Butler, outfield; Eric Paczewski, third; Ray Russin, shortstop; Sean Shovlin, second; Mike Prokopchak, John Mekeever, outfielders; Emery Yurko, third and Mike Mikula, pitcher. Dallas is in the West Division of AAA and will play Valley West, Tunkhannock, Wyoming Area and Pittston twice each during the season. They will also play Ber- wick, Nanticoke, Hazleton, Crestwood and Coughlin once. “Valley West and Tunkhannock are always tough and Wyoming Area has a lot of their kids back.
