The second week of play
hasn’t even begun in the Wyo-
ming Valley Basketball Confer-
ence and already the Lady
Mountaineers have practically
sewn up the first half title.
Picking up important victories
in its first two games against
Crestwood and Meyers, Dallas
completed the hat trick by
knocking off Seton Catholic, 56-
49, last Monday to improve its
record to 3-0 in Division II play.
“Somebody is going to have to
upset us now if we lose a game
the rest of the half,”’ coach Kit
Karuza said. “GAR is also 3-0,
but they haven't really been
tested.
“They still have to play
Meyers and Crestwood and they
are a problem for anybody,”
Karuza added. ‘Crestwood had
some injuries when we played
them but they are starting to
get things together. And Meyers
has size and speed and they are
very tough.”
Looking ahead, the prospect
for Dallas is even brighter in
the second half. The Mounts will
host both the Comets and Seton
and will have to face only the
Mohawks on the road. And, by
then, Dallas should be on a roll,
if it isn’t already. ’
“We played very well against
Meyers and Coughlin, and we
did fairly well against Seton, ”’
Karuza explained. ‘“We played
well enough to win but not as
well as we could have played.”
But the Mounts did show char-
acter, and that may be as much
of a factor in Dallas’ success.
Seton dominated the first
quarter of play, racing out to a
four-point lead after one quarter
and holding onto a one-point
advantage at the half. But the
Mountaineers went on a 9-0
spurt to start the third and hit
the boards, too, to seal the win
late in the fourth.
“This team doesn’t worry
about losing,’ Karuza
explained. “We know if we play
as a team we will do well. They
have played under pressure in
these (three) games, and they
showed they do have charac-
ter.”
They also showed they can
score. Angie Kern poured in 19
points and Joanne Cook added
14 against Seton, while Eileen
Walsh and Lori Brokenshire
tossed in nine and eight points
respectively.
