CAN YOU BELIEVE that
Christmas is just a week away?
Where does the time go? With
Christmas program practices,
shopping, wrapping, baking,
and partying it seems to go
pretty fast.
When I am Christmas shop-
ping I always reminisce about
my days as a Christmas
employee at Boston Store (now
Boscov’s). As a shopper I know
things get hectic, but believe
me, being a salesperson during
the holiday season is pretty
tough. Please try to be under-
standing this season when shop-
ping. I'm sure the salespeople
are doing the best they can.
MRS. JOANN PRESPER held

League of Wilkes-Barre. The

THE SWETLAND HOME,
which is maintained by the
Wyoming Valley Historical and
Geological Society holds an
annual holiday program which
is just like being transported
back into the 1800s.
The Swetland Home, deco-
rated like it would have been
over 100 years ago, with pine
and red ribbons, is delightful to
visit. Volunteers recreate the
roles of the Swetland family,
explaining about the house and
holiday decorations:
beautiful tree decorated with
paper stars, and other hand-
crafted ornaments. Originally,
candles would have adorned the
tree, but of course this is not
possible now. Popcorn and cran-
berries would also have been
strung to decorate the tree.
. The dining room was set with
the finest china for the holiday
meal. The bedroom reflects the
fashion of the times. In the
kitchen Welsh cookies were
being baked over an open fire.
The visit this year was special
for me because my daughters,
Nicole and Nancy, were work-
ing as Swetland family mem-
bers.

Holiday season of entertain-
ment begins each year at the
end of November and continues
through Christmas. Various
host of holiday festivities, his-
toric traditions, religious
events, and activities that
include exhibits, musicals, arts
and crafts, tours, and food and
entertainment. The Christmas
spirit is alive and well in Penn-
sylvania. There is no question
that the state has long been
noted for its colorful and
resplendent celebration of the
Christmas season. Readers,

Candle-Lite Carolling and the
Opening of Santa’s House was
held at Courthouse Square in

period music took place at the
Slifer House Museum in Lewis-
