Underclass cagers Houck, Andrew Sabaluski and Rob Michaels. By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer The Lake-Lehman male cagers are preparing for another Wyoming Valley Conference basket- ball season which kicks off with their first exhibition game this Friday night at home with Bishop O’Reilly. The Black Knights’ regular season will open Dec. 16 at home with North- west. Coach Rodger Bearde, who will dress nine varsity men, will depend on experience and a strong defense to have a winning season. Carl Houck, six foot, five inch junior, last season’s leading scorer and rebounder, is returning this year and Bearde looks to him for some good plays. Since the Knights have no other men over six foot, they will have to give Hauck a lot of help since he can’t win the games by himself. Returning guards Chris Landmesser and Walt Konopke have a lot of experience. Jason Cadwa- lader’s experience should help and Alex Freder- ick and Andy Sabaluski are moving well. Dan Hudzik is the strongest man on the Knights’ team and jumps well. Sabaluski is strong on defense and as a rebounder and Frederick is a good scorer. Rob Michaels and Lenny Annetta are developing with Annetta showing a lot of ability. “We're a fairly fast team,” said Bearde. “We’ll look to run and get a transition game going our way. If we get some good leadership from our seniors, we should jell and do better than last season’s .500.”’ Bearde said G.A.R. will be the team to beat this year in Division II, followed by Hanover, who has the most players returning, then Dallas and Northwest. Dallas has one of the league’s top players in Mike Luksic and, if surrounded by the right players, he will lead the Mountaineers as a threat. Coach Bearde figures Northwest’s Coach Han- dley can be a threat in the league and with four good starters returning can give some problems. If Bearde’s athletes develop as he hopes, they can also pose a threat to the other teams in the division. Bowling news Three men on Carverton B Dickinson’s (472).. L. By JOHN HOINSKI Staff Writer Coming off a 10-16 season last year, including its fourth straight playoff appearance under fifth year head coach Clarence Ozgo, the Dallas boys’ basketball team is again expected to be competitive in the Wyoming Valley Confer- ence. But just how far they will go remains to be seen. “We should be better than last year,” Ozgo said. “But, we are going to have to mature quickly. I don’t know if we can win it. But if we play up to our poten- tial I think we can play against anybody. If we don’t, we can finish as low as sixth.” : Gone from last year’s team, which finished 9-9 in the confer- ence, are second team all-star guard Dennis Dacosin and his running mate Bob O’Donnell who finished second on the team in scoring. In addition, the Mounts lost two-year starter Tim Moyer and forward Tim Lyons, whom Ozgo says was probably the team’s best player at the end of last season. CLARENCE 0ZGO Dallas boys’ coach But Dallas will return two starters in senior forwards Tom Shalata and John Thomas. Shal- ata stands at 6-4 while Thomas measures in at 6-1. Mike Luksic, a 6-6 junior, will man the center position with Tom Perlis and John Mokychic, 15 be tough a pair of juniors, handling the guard slots. Ozgo will also be looking to forwards Randy Cool- baugh and Dave Szella to supply help off the bench, and from Eric Moore as a forward and center. Jerome Mattey, a 5-9 senior, will also help out at guard. “GAR, Meyers and Hanover are probably the three top teams in the league,” 0zgo said. “But there are a lot of other teams who are going to be competitive. Seton Catholic, Northwest and Lake-Lehman all have a lot of players back and they are going to be tough.” Because of the inexperience of this year’s squad, Ozgo expects to see a lot of pressure defense early in the season and says he’s preparing his team accord- ingly. ‘‘We have been practicing those types of situations to get our kids ready,” Ozgo explained. “And I am pleased with the attitude of the team. But, overall, if we grow up quickly we should be all right. And that’s the way it usually is with Clarence Ozgo-coached teams. 4 Reg. $2670.00 Repossessed Price Only Korg & [XY leTale] Synthesizers DOWN iL FINANCING SUNDAY 15 {3 Wilkes-Barre RoE) AVAILABLE F PHONE 829-2644 | Viewmont Mall NG PRE-OWNED | PIANOS rhe Lil ARYA : 4 1; 675-6500 RENT A VCR & MOVIE ONLY $495 NO PURCHASE NECESSARY! 1000's OF MOVIES!
