ANTHONY DELUCA
JUNE HORST
general public?
Security
People planning fo refire next
year or in the near future
should not wait until the last
minute to get answers to the
questions they may have about
Social Security. This may lead
to a delay in benefits or Medi-
care coverage, or even the loss
of benefits in some cases.
The people at any Social
Security office can answer a
person’s questions about retire-
ment benefits.
Social Security generally sug-
gests that people apply two to
three months before the month
they wish their Social Security
checks to begin. .
You may apply by mail, by
telephone, or in person. Once a
person is interviewed by phone,
the rest may be handled by
mail. The best times to call the
office to assure prompt service
is during the latter part of the
month, on Thursday or Friday,
and in the afternoon.
A person applying for retire-
ment benefits should have his or
her Social Security card or a
cial record of birth or baptism
recorded early in life or other
evidence by birth; a copy of his
or her W-2 form for the last
year; or if self-employed, a
copy of the self-employment tax
return for the last year since
recent reports may not yet be in
the records. If spouses and chil-
dren are also eligible, evidence
may also include a marriage
license for a spouse and birth
certificates of spouse and chil-
dren.
People who have questions
about retirement should call the
Social Security office. That
number is 826-6371.
