presenter, paid special tribute to
comedian Red Skelton, this year’s
recipient of the prestigious Gover-
nor’s Award.
The awards show was again
produced by Alexander Cohen and
his wife, Hildy Parks, and directed
by Jeff Margolis.
This year Parks created a cele-
bration of television’s contribution
to the language with a multitude of
TV stars presented on tape and in
person. Production numbers were
kept to a minimum with the excep-
tion of Shelley Long’s musical
salute to the progress of women in
television.
Instead of saving major awards
for last, this year’s Emmy broad-
cast featured them throughout the
show. Awards were given in groups
of four with a generous sampling of
clips from the programs and its
stars. As for total awards, NBC took
19 of 31 awards, CBS took 10, and
ABC and PBS had one each on a
show which was surprising for its
pace and taste; and above all, it
finished on time.
The series most lauded with top
honors “at the prime time Emmy
ceremony were CBS’s ‘Cagney &
Lacey,” and NBC’s “St. Elsewhere”
he TW
Balken installed
and “The Golden Girls.” Although it
received 16 nominations, more than
any other show, ABC’s ‘“Moonlight-
ing” won only a technical award for
editing which was announced weeks
earlier.
CBS’s “Cagney & Lacey,” about
two women detectives, won for best
drama series for the second straight
year.
“It was a lovely sweep,” said Ms.
Gless of her show’s winning four
Emmys. Sharon Gless was not only
“the luckiest girl in the world,” as
she referred to herself, but also the
most patient as she finally won the
Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead
Actress in a Drama Series. ‘This
was part of my dream. I love this
business...I love all of you,” said
Sharon as she held the statuette
high above her head.
Gless plays Sgt. Christine Cagney,
the NYPD detective partner of
Lacey (Tyne Daly) in the CBS
series. Ms. Daly’s husband, Georg
Stanford Brown, won for best direc-
tor on “Cagney & Lacey,” and John
Karlen, who plays Daly’s husband
Harvey on the series, won for best
For the second year, winam
Daniels, Dr. Mark Craig, of NBC's
“St. Elsewhere,” was honored for
outstanding lead actor in a dra-
matic series, and his wife, Bonnie
Bartlett, was honored as best sup-
porting actress in a dramatic series
for her work on the same show.
“The Golden Girls” was a big
winner capturing laurels in the best
comedy, actress (Betty White), and
writing categories.
Also winning the series category
were Michael J. Fox of NBC's
“Family Ties” (best actor,
comedy), and Rhea Perlman of
NBC’s ‘“‘Cheers’ (supporting
actress, comedy). NBC’s “Hallmark
Hall of Fame: Love is Never Silent”
won as best drama special, and
NBC’s “Peter the Great” as best
miniseries.
Marlo Thomas received an Emmy
for best actress in a special or
miniseries for ‘“‘Nobody’s Child’
and Dustin Hoffman was best actor
for “Death of a Salesman,” both on
CBS.
