By REP. COSLETT
Special to The Post
Here is a summary
of important events
that occurred on Cap-
itol Hill last week
from Rep. Frank Cos-
lett, 120th Legislative
District.
CAPITOL EXPAN-
SION COMMITTEE -
A meeting of the spe-
cial House committee
investigating the Cap-
itol expansion project
was opened to the
public this week when
the panel’s Republi-
can: chairman
objected to plans to
bar the public from
the session. Rep. Jef-
frey E. Piccola (R-
Dauphin) blasted the
committee’s Demo-
cratic leader for
scheduling a last-
minute closed execu-
tive session. Piccola
said the move to close
the session was in
violation of House
rules and the state’s
Sunshine Law. “The
chairman has no
right to close a meet-
ing to the press and
public without the
agreement of the
majority of commit-
tee members,”’ Pic-
cola said. As a result
of Piccola’s objec-
tions, the meeting
was opened to the
press and public.
COMBATING
DRUG TRAFFICK-
ING - Legislators
from Pennsylvania,
Maryland and West
Virginia will meet in
Hagerstown, Md., on
Sept. 17 at a public
hearing into the grow-
ing problem of drug
trafficking and under-
age drinking in Penn-
sylvania, Maryland
and West Virginia.
Rep. Terry Punt (R-
Franklin) announced
this week that law
enforcement and gov-
ernment officials,
judicial officers,
social service profes-
sionals and members
of the general public
have been invited to
testify. In July, at a
tri-state conference of
legislators hosted by
Punt, it was unani-
mously agreed that
drug trafficking and
underage drinking
were problems of the
tri-state region.
“We're attempting to
get an idea of the
scope of the problem
and the efforts being
made to combat it,”
Punt said. ‘“We’re
also looking into the
possibility of estab-
lishing a tri-state task
force to battle drug
and alcohol abuse.”
