PAGE EIGHT By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Correspondent After coaching at Coughlin High School and Wilkes College for five years, Rich Gorgone returned to Lake-Lehman as head football coach in 1965 and led a record for the season. He returns this season for the second consecutive year with the hope that his Black Knights will finish the season at the top of their division. Gorgone, a resident of Shavertown, is entering his 18th year as a coach. A graduate of West Pittston High School where he played in the backfield and Lock Haven College where he played on the varsity as a running back, football runs in Gorgone’s blood. “I dreamed of the day that I could coach football,” said Gorgone. “There is ® nothing more rewarding than working with these kids, helping them to achieve their potential and become good ath- letes.” When Gorgone graduated from college, he first taught and coached in New Jersey. In 1974, he came to Lake-Lehman where he first taught history in the junior high school and coached the football team for five years. In 1979, he left the coaching position at Lake-Lehman and served as an assistant coach at Coughlin High School for a year. The following year, he accepted a posi- tion as assistant coach at Wilkes College where he remained until he returned as head coach at Lake-Lehman last year. This season Gorgone has been moved to the senior high school where he will teach the history classes. Gorgone and his wife, Drena, are the parents of four children — Megan, a senior at Dallas High School and this year’s Prom Queen; Sam, an eighth arlot M. Sam played soccer for years but gave it up in order to play football. : Gorgone’s enthusiasm for the game of football is easily transferred to the mem- bers of his team, who quickly assume the same positive attitude of their coach. He is the first to tell you that his priority in coaching is to try to be positive. He said he tries to teach his team members to use their mental abilities as well as their physical abilities in the game. “I want my players to play tough on the field but to play intelligently, not play to hurt someone,” said Gorgone. Gorgone is excited about this season. He believes the year’s experience and the enthusiasm of the players will keep them keyed in to finishing on the top.
