that the field of entertainment
covers many diverse areas. Even
though multi-faceted, the chief
source of entertainment for most
people is television. If one looks
hard enough, there are numerous
organizations, even in TV
broadcasting, that render great
assistance to the general public and
furnish valuable information to
satisfy one’s curiosity or interest.
One such organization is the
Television Information Office.

provide a bridge
of understanding
between the
public and the
television

that its role be understood. TIO
provides a continuing information
service to meet the needs of the
public, educators, students, the
press, the clergy, government
agencies, librarians,
communications professionals, as
well as broadcasters.
When the debate on TV’s impact
on children began, TIO published
For the Young Viewer, a study of
worthwhile children’s programming
by stations throughout the United
States. The book won a special
George Foster Peabody Award.
It also commissioned TV as Art, a
compilation of ten essays also
produced by the National Council of
