Brett Gauntlett hurled a two-
hitter and Ray Russin knocked out
two hits and scored three runs as
the Back Mountain 13-year-old
Teeners downed Kingston, 10-4,
Sunday afternoon in the Annual
Forty Fort Lions 13-year-old Tour-
nament at Fort-Swoyer Teener
Field.
Eric Paczewski also drove out two
hits at four times at the plate,
two runs. Jim Chamberlain, who did
a stellar performance behind home
plate, also scored three runs and
went 1-for-2 at the plate.
Kingston took an early 1-0 lead int
the top of the first inning while
Gauntlett was struggling for con-
trol, giving up four walks to force in
a run.
The Back Mountain Teeners came
right back in the bottom of the first,
scoring runs. Ray Russin led off the
inning with a double and stole third.
Jim Chamberlain took first on a
walk when Sam Gorgone hit an RBI
single. Paczewski went. to first on a
fielder’s choice and scored on a fly
to right field. Runs scored in the
inning were by Russin, Paczewski
and Chamberlain as the local team
went in front 3-1.

Back Mountain increased their
lead to 4-2 in the third inning on two
hits before Kingston pitcher Gerry
Toney retired the side on strikeouts.

Russin to relieve Gauntlett on the
mound and after Jamie Innamorati
struck out, Toney came up to the
plate and drove a long one over the
left field fence to give Kingston
another run. The next two men were
retired and the score moved to 4-3.
Toney retired the Back Mountain
Teeners in 1-2-3 order, two on strike
outs and one on a ground out to the
infield.
In the fifth inning, Gauntlett came
back to the mound and gave up one
walk before retiring the next three
men. In the bottom of the fifth, the
Back Mountain boys broke the
game wide open with Russin going
to first on a walk, Chamberlain
hitting a single, then Paczewski
rapping out an RBI single. Eric
Pieczynski came in as a relief hitter
for Mike Sholtis and hit out an RBI
single and Neil Kaiser followed with
another RBI hit. Pete Kerdesky and
Jamie Janosky both came to the

Gauntlett put the Kingston nine
down in 1-2-3 order in the sixth
inning and, in the seventh inning,
Kingston managed one hit and one
run to push the score to 10-4, the
Back Mountain Teeners scoring a
final run in the sixth when Russin
singled, stole two bases and scored
on Paczewski’s RBI ground out.
Gauntlett fanned seven, walked
eight and gave up only two hits.
Russin struck out one, walked one
and gave up only one hit in the one
and one-third inning he pitched.
“The boys are All-Stars, picked
from various teams, but they.play
together as though they have all
season,” said Manager Mike Wil-
liams. “They're a great group of
boys and are very coachable. They
play together as a team and not one
tries to play the ‘prima donna’. It’s
a pleasure to work with them. They
all came through when we needed
them.
The Back Mountain Teeners play
Plains in the semi-finals, Thursday,
5:15 p.m. at Fort-Swoyer field. The
winner of that game goes into the
finals Sunday to play for the title.

After edging out District 15’s
Canton team, 7-6, last Tuesday night
at the Back Mountain field, the
Back Mountain American girls soft-

field and lost to Guilford of District
14, 10-6, to end their chance to
compete for the junior girls title in

The local girls went into the fifth
inning with a 6-2 lead but Guilford
used five walks and a single to start

inning but the Back Mountain girls
came back in the second with four
runs when Carol. Ewan walked six
batters in the inning.
Guilford scored a second run in
the top half of the fourth inning but
the Back Mountain girls came back
with two runs in their half of the
fourth. Alison Labbate took base on
a walk and Threse Mathers was
safe on an error following Jennifer
Goon’s forceout at third base. Ste-
phanie drew a walk to load the
bases, Wendy Cave was out on a
pop-fly, then Wysocki and Melanie
Marino walked to make the score 6-
2. ;

had an outstanding play in the
fourth inning to close down Guil-
ford’s scoring when she threw out
Guilford’s Amber Mellott at home
plate to retire the side.
In Tuesday's game, the American
girls collected 11 hits, four of them
for extra bases in pickingup the 7-6

the bottom of the first inning. In the
third inning the local girls scored
two runs to take a 6-1 lead but again
Canton came back with a run in the
bottom of the third.
Back Mountain went in front 7-2 in
the top of the fourth on Jennifer
Coon’s RBI single, the run which
proved to be the winning score of
the game. There was one out and
runners at first and third base when
Coon hit a single to centerfield
scoring Alison Labbate who was on
base by a walk. Theresa Mathers
was on a baseby an error but she
was thrown out trying to cross home
plate. Coon went to third on the

Canton girls refused to give up
and rallied for four runs before
relief hitter Wendy Cornell was out
trying to turn third base after driv-
ing out a triple with the bases
loaded.
The American girls tried for
another run in the sixth inning when
infield single and went to second on
an error. Kris Moyer grounded out
to second and Kaleta went to third.
Labbate hit a single but Kaleta was
unable to score on it, then Karen
Wisnieski hit into a double play to
end their half of the inning.
Hitting triples for the Back Moun-
tain team were Cave, Wyocki with
two, and Kriner had a double.

outs. The Back Mountain boys went
scoreless in the second inning and
going into the third inning the score
remained at 3-1.
In the third inning, Gerry Lepore,
first man up, was hit by a pitched
ball and took first but he was out
trying to steal second. Mike Bianco
hit an infield fly, then Brian Rings-
dorf hit .a grounder through the
infield. The Kingston boys were able
to score a run on the hit and three
Pizza Bar and the Rebels continue
to lead Division A in the Back
Mountain Slow Pitch League with
identical 18-1 records. Farmers Inn
falls behind at 15-5 while Hum-
phrey’s has a 14-5 slate.
Scores for this past week in Divi-
sion A action are: Pizza Bar 9, Fort
Pike 6; Humphrey’s 13, Kandlelite
7; Farmers Inn 5, Mac-Lyn 2;
Rebels 14, Pickett’s 6; Rave’s 7,
Jones 6; Scholl’s 8, Carl’s 1.
