The Pennsylvania Quilters met
recently “at Penn State Hayfield
House to discuss plans for the forth-
coming Quilt Show ’86 which will be
held October 11 and 12, at Penn
State University, Wilkes-Barre
Campus, Lehman.
Jill Space, Audrey Angelella and
Clara Slembarski are this year’s
show coordinators. Penn State Show
coordinator is Tobi Grossman.

The quilt show will feature
approximately 200 quilts, new and
antique, and numerous small
quilted items. Original art work and
antique exhibits will complement
the quilts displayed in the beautiful
and historic Hayfield House. A slide
show of the Great American Quilt
Festival held this past spring in
New York City will be shown. Fan-
tastic door prizes, homemade food,
and many vendors will also be
featured. The Raffle Quilt, a stun-
ning hand-appliqued rose wreath
medallion pattern, will be raffled off
on Sunday, October 12, at 5 p.m.
Workshops will be conducted both
days. Instructors will be Virginia
Avery, Port Chester, NY, quilter
and nationally known teacher and
lecturer; Gladys Grace, Pomfret
Center, CT, designer and stencil
artist, with her exclusive method of
shaded stenciling; Donna Goobic,
Shickshinny, PA, founder of Penn-
sylvania Quilters and well known
teacher and quilter; Marge Hoban,
Tunkhannock, PA, teacher and quil-
ter; and Joanne Ennis, Dallas, PA,
teacher, quilter and quilt store
owner.

Bar-B-Que planned
Wilkes-Barre General Hospital
offers a pre-surgical class on an on-
going basis for patients scheduled
for surgery at General and their
family members. The class pre-
pares patients for surgery by
increasing their understanding of
the overall care plan before and
after the operation. It is also helpful
to parents of children scheduled for
surgery at Wilkes-Barre General
Hospital.
The class is free of charge and is
coordinated by Kathy Ashton, RN, a
critical care staff nurse. She is
tered nurse from the Surgical Serv-
ices Department.

is also available for speaking
engagements with area organiza-

THE SHAVERTOWN VOLUN-
TEER FIRE COMPANY will hold
its annual Auction-Bazaar on July
31,” August 1 and August 2. The
auction will start at 6 p.m. on July

be live music with the ‘Touch of
Country’ band at 8 p.m.

“WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT?”
will be theme for free interpretive
programs the weekend of August 1.
On Saturday, August 2, at 2 p.m.,
the film ‘‘Animal Populations:
Nature’s Checks and Balances’ will
be shown. This film looks at such
things as climate, food supply, pre-
dation and disease, all critical fac-
tors that affect the composition of
communities. Following the film, a
simulation game will show how
many deer can survive in a herd’s
home range based on food availabil-
ity and competition.
On Sunday, August 3, at 2 p.m.,
Ed Gdosky, Game Protector for the
Pennsylvania Game Commission,
will explain his role in wildlife
management. Rabies, a topic of
growing concern, will also be dis-
cussed. Gdosky has been with the
Game Commission for 30 years and
recently received the Outstanding
Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement
Officer Award for Pennsylvania.
The public is invited to take
advantage of these free public pro-
grams. All programs will meet at
the Environmental Information Bul-
letin Board near the front of the
boat rental parking area.

DALLAS BAPTIST CHURCH will
present Family Night on Sunday,
August 3, at 7 p.m.
This special service will conclude
eight days of Vacation Bible School
for children. Featured as special
guest will be Linda LaBar, Chris-
tian ventriloquist. Children will
share what they have learned
during Vacation Bible School with a
special program.
A slide presentation will highlight
the activities of the preschool
department. Other children’s
classes will share their Bible School
experiences through singing and
Bible verses. First and second grad-
ers will present a song through sign
language. Joye Pimm, Vacation
Bible School director, will recognize
teachers and classes and attendance
certificates will be awarded.
The church is located on Route
415, Idetown. Pastor is David

THE FALLS VOLUNTEER HOSE
& AMBULANCE CO. will hold its
annual picnic August 8 and 9.
The picnic will begin on Friday
with the Fireman’s .Parade at 7
p.m. folllowed by The Fling-A-Thing
Dance Party with Paul Ciliberto.
Saturday features the Keating
Brothers Rock Duo. Capping off the
evening will be a fireworks display.
Homemade food and Bingo will be
offered both nights for everyone’s
enjoyment.

THE J.R. DAVIS VOLUNTEER
FIRE COMPANY, Idetown, will
hold its 21st Annual Horse Show on
August 9 and 10 at the Lehman
Show Grounds, Route 118. The show
will start at 8:30 a.m. both days and
continue all day long.
There will be free parking and
children under 12 years of age will
be admitted free.
Come and enjoy a fun-filled day.
On Saturday, there will be hunters,
jumpers, English pleasure, chil-
dren’s equitation, pony hunters and
short stirrup classes. On Sunday,
there will be 4-H classes, Western
and pony pleasure, pony driving,
barrell races, flag race and many
more timed events.
The firemen, ladies auxiliary and
friends of the fire company will be
serving breakfst each morning and
refreshments will be available all
day.

WILKES-BARRE GENERAL
HOSPITAL'S special sibling class,
“Our New Addition,”’ will be held on
Tuesday, August 12, at 6:30 p.m. in
Saidman Hall on the hospital’s first
floor.
The two-hour class, held every
eight weeks, is designed to promote
family bonding and to help lessen
the anxiety of a child who might
feel threatened by the arrival of a
new baby into the family.
It is open free of charge to par-
ents who are already enrolled in
their children and to others expect-
ing a baby within two months of the
sibling class.

THE FIRST RED CROSS SWIM-
A-CROSS will be held on August 9,
from 9 am. to 9 p.m. at Prestige
Pools, Route 315, Wilkes-Barre.
There will be free hot dogs and
soda for all swimmers. There will
also be live coverage of the Swim-A-
Cross by WBAX-AM 1240 and John
Evans, a TV celebrity from WNEP-
TV Channel 16 will be at Prestige
Pools from 1 to 5 p.m.
Muskin Inc. is teaming up with
Prestige Pools to help the commu-
nity. An 18 foot above ground pool
with filter is being raffled to benefit
the Red Cross. Tickets are $1 with
the drawing scheduled for 5 p.m.
Anyone interested in participating
should sign up at Prestige Pools or
at the. Wyoming Valley Chapter,
American Red Cross.

market on Saturday, August 9, at
the Kunkle Fire Company Grounds
beginning at 9 a.m.,
The Kunkle Fire Company
grounds are located on Route 309,

starting at 1 p.m.
