The German Sports Club of Fulda,
West Germany will take on the
Greater Pocono Mountain Soccer
League All-Stars tomorrow night at
6 p.m. at the Penn State Wilkes-
Barre campus field at Lehman.
The team has been touring the
Eastern United States and recently
played in Allentown after its initial
stop in Philadelphia. Following the
two games here, which will be free
of charge, the club will leave for
Atlanta, Georgia on Friday.
The area all-star squad will be
made up of members from 10 differ-
ent teams, most of whom will be
from the Back Mountain.
Approximately six years ago the
West German club blasted the
locals, 14-2, but then suffered a 4-2
loss themselves in a return visit
three years ago. The turnaround
may or may not mean anything. But
all-star coach Jay Harvey predicts
another close game this time, too.
“I really don’t know why we got
beat so bad the first time,” Harvey,
who also pilots the Wyoming Semi-
nary Lower School team, said. “I
don’t know if they were just that
good or if it was that we were not
that organized. I wasn’t too familiar
with the program back then. But
this should be a good match.”
Still, even though Harvey says
interest in the sport has grown here
in the United States, it can’t com-
pare to the fevered pitch it has
reached in other countries.
“You have to remember that the
ability of a 15-year old player over
there is probably equal to that of a
19-year old over here,”’ Harvey
explained. “They start playing over
there when they are four years old,
whereas here they might not start
until they are about six, seven or
eight.
“We have bulk and size and
speed, but we are not as skilled and
we don’t have the ball control they
have. They are solid at every posi-
tion,” he continued.

Penn State Open Golf Tournament held recently at the
Wyoming Valley Country Club. The $20,000 Custom Penn State
Van offered for a hole-in-one on No. 13 went unclaimed, but
mroe than $2000 worth of prizes were awarded. 52 player
competed. Flight winners were: Flight 1, Jack Serafin; Flight 2,
James Lentini; Flight 3, Bill Davidovitz; Flight 4, Paul Klug;
Flight 5, Harry O’Neill; and Flight 6, Chris Borton. Shown are

to the pin on No. 5; Pete Korba, longest drive on No. 1;
Dennis Garvey, tournament committee; and Chuck Youngman,
tournament committee. Penn State Wilkes-Barre would like to
thank all the sponsors who contributed to the tournament's
success. All proceeds go to the benefit of the Penn State
Wilkes-Barre Mountain Lion Booster Club.
All-star voting is a lot like
democracy; maybe it’s not the most
efficient system around, but it keeps
the public fairly happy and
announces to athletes and
politicians something they too often
forget or ignore — if it weren’t for
us, they’d have to get real jobs.
Well, it’s All-

want to see play
in the mid-
summer classic
and then get to ;

It is the same tune every year.
The only differences are the soloists
who sing the annual ‘I Deserve To
Be On The All-Star Team, The Fans
Are So Dumb’ blues.
Don Mattingly is doing a fine
rendition of this number when he
wails: “Sure, I think the voting
should be closer, but how can I be
upset. I know who is voting.”
Needless to say, the Yankee-Doodle
saddie is second to California
Angel’s rookie Wally Joyner for the
starting nod at first.
I really get choked up when I hear
players whining about not getting
the votes they feel they rightfully
deserve. Some one ought to sit some
of these young men down and
explain a few things to them.
For one thing, no one has a right
to be on the All-Star team. To be
selected for the team is an honor
and a privilege, not an inalienable
right like moaning to the press or
making a million a year.
For one thing, the public has
every right in the world to choose
whomever quickens their pulse or
sets their hands to clapping.
This business about the average
fan not knowing enough about the
abilities of the ballplayers to make
a good voting decision is irrevelant
and not true.
It comes down to this. The
tobacco juice for 181 of the 182 days
of the baseball season. On only one
day a year do they have a voice on
who plays and who sits. Players
should accept the tide of public
opinion, shut up and play ball. The
ones that don’t might have all-star
ability, but their character is minor
league all the way.
The All-Star Vote:
Looking at the probable starting
lineups for the All-star game, I
don’t see that much to carp about.
Although there is a week of voting
to go and some heavy ballot stuffing
could make a difference, here’s an
idea of what you can expect.
