David Preston, announced the results of TELLS (Testing for Essential Learn- ing and Literacy Skills) at the regular monthly school board meeting, on June 10, 1986. Four hundred and eight one stu- dents from Lake- Lehman in grades 3, 5 and 8 were among the 350,000 public school students and 68,000 non-public students, statewide, who took the tests in March. These tests, designed to measure a stu- dent’s achievement in reading and mathe- matics, provide an ‘‘early warning system’’ so that schools, pupils and parents can begin corrective procedures before it’s too late for effective remediation. The test results showed that among 155 third grade stu- dents who took the reading test, 85 per- cent exceeded the cut score of 43 correct answers out of 63 questions. For third grade mathematics, 92 percent exceeded the cut score of 49 correct answers out of 69 questions. Among 172 fifth grade students taking the reading test, 83 per- cent exceeded the cut score of 46 out of 67 questions. For the fifth grade mathe- matics test, 79 per- cent of the fifth grad- ers exceeded the cut score of 53 correct answers out of 78 questions. Among 154 eighth grade students taking the reading ¢ test, 90 percent exceeded the cut score of 52 out of 77 questions. On the mathematics test, 85 percent of the eighth graders exceeded the cut score of 54 correct answers out of 82 questions. In terms of actual students who must be remediated, the num- bers are quite low, in that several of these students are already participating in the federally funded (Chapter 1) remedial programs in reading and math. The actual numbers (not per- centage) of students who will be required to participate in remedial programs during the 1986-87 school year are as follws: 3rd Grade Reading 7, Math 6; 5th Grade Reading 22, Math 26; 8th Grade Reading 6, Math 23. Dr. Preston is very pleased with the TELLS results. He believes that they are indicative of the qual- ity of the instruc- tional program at Lake-Lehman. Individual students’ scores, along with a letter of explanation, will be sent home with report cards in June. Parents who have questions about the scores should con- tact the Principal of Guidance Counselor of their child’s school. The remedial pro- grams wil lbegin during the 1986-87 school year; they will parallel the success- ful Chapter 1 pro- grams already in operation. radial tires. Runs good, $1800.
