    ‘Waiting for truck
By JOHN HOINSKI
Staff Writer
After years of persistence, the
Jonathan R. Davis Volunteer Fire
Company of Idetown is finally on
the verge of purchasing a new fire
truck. X
The department is presently using
a 1959 Chevy pumper, but that
model has become old and outdated
and not totally reliable. Finally,
after much consideration, company
members decided to purchase a new
1985 GMC Chassis that should arrive
by either October or November.
The company still plans ti keep
the present truck which will be used
for brush fires and similar type
calls.
“We are at the point where the
truck we have been using is getting
too old, and you have to wonder how
long it will last,” Fire Chief Dick
Heuer stated. “That truck is 27
years old. How much longer could it
keep producing?
“It took a long time to persuade
the company to go into debt for the
truck,” Heuer added. ‘But our aim
is to provide the best possible serv-
ice to our people, so it was a move
that had to be done.”
The company, which serves 300
families, hopes to pay for the $87,450
unit through a 2 per cent loan and
other methods, including pledges
from the families of the community.
Heuer said in the past the com-
pany has asked for a yearly dona-
tion of $25 from those families to
cover maintenance costs, but
because of the new acquisition, he
will now ask for an additional $50
for five years that will be used
solely for the payment of the new
truck.
“That 2 per cent loan will pay for
half the price of the truck, but we
have to pay it back within ten
years,” he said. ‘“That’s a lot of
money we have to pay just for the
truck alone, not counting money for
gas and upkeep and other necessi-
ties.”
Heuer said another reason for the
purchase of the new unit was
because of the increased difficulty
in buying insurance.
“State laws and regulations are
getting stronger all the time and
you have to have updated equip-
ment. When insurance companies
come in they say, ‘Hey, you're not a
first-class operation.’
“We are trying to provide the best
service we can and in order to do
