and superintendents from three
neighboring school districts at a
special “Friendship Dinner’, Thurs-
day, June 12, at the campus in
Lehman.
Guest speaker will be Martha
Zeller, head of the national task
force on public support for public
education for the American Associa-
tion of University Women (AAUW).
Mrs. Zeller is the former school
board president of the Lewisburg
Area School District and was a
member of the Pennsylvania State
Advisory Council for Community
Education. She is Director of Chari-
table Contributions for Weis Mar-
kets, Inc.

THE HARVEYS LAKE DEMO-
sponsor a motorboat Poker Run, in
conjunction with the Harveys Lake
Homecoming Festival. There will be
a $3 entry fee, and all proceeds will
go to the H.L.. Homecoming Festival
Committee.
The Poker Run will take place on
Saturday, June 14, from 12 until 1:30
p-m. All participants will report to
the Lake View Inn dock, where 3

send-off for Durland Edwards and
“The Spirit of Wilkes-Barre’ from
Public Square. The official Public
Square send-off ceremony, sched-
uled to begin at 10 a.m. on June 14,
1986, will include good luck and best
wishes from the Wilkes-Barre City
Mayor, Thomas V. McLaughlin,
officers of the Chamber of Com-
merce, and Msgr. Andrew J.
McGowan.
The World Champion Hanover
Area High School Cheerleaders will
also be a part of the ceremonies.
The Chamber of Commerce
encourages all Wilkes-Barre area
residents to join in the ceremonies
on Public Square to show our com-
munity support for Durland
Edwards and his crew of ‘The
Spirit of Wilkes-Barre,” whic is
leaving for California to prepare for
competition in the Great American
Race coming to Wilkes-Barre on
July 4.

THE MEADOWS NURSING
CENTER AUXILIARY will hold its
Second Annual Flea Market on Sat-
urday, June 14 on the grounds of the
Nursing Center, 55 West Center Hill
Road, Dallas, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
As June 14 is Flag Day the
market will be opened with a tradi-
tional flag ceremony. Many vendors :
homemade pie and coffee for des-
sert. All proceeds will benefit the
Chapel Fund.

THE NEWLY ELECTED MEM-
BERS of the executive committee of
the Penn State/Wilkes-Barre
Alumni Association say there is still
time to register for this Saturday’s
(June 14) Alumni Family Reunion
to be held at the campus in
Lehman. Alumni living as far away
as North Carolina have already
signed up for the day of fun and
games.
The day will start with registra-
tion at 10:30 a.m. at the Student
Commons. A number of faculty
mini-workshops will be held from
11-1:30. Battle of the Majors games
competition will run from 2-4, the
band “Just Us” will play from 4-8
p.m. Food and beverages will be
provided at a cost of $2 per person
and $5 per family.

BOB COLE will be featured guest
speaker at Dallas Baptist Church on
Sunday, June 15. For many years,
Mr. Cole gambled professionally
and was portrayed by Robert Red-
ford in the major motion picture,
“The Sting.”
On Saturday, June 14, he will
speak at the Chase Correctional
Institution. Before the service at
Dallss Church, he is addressing
guests at the annual Father’s Day
Breakfast sponsored by the Wyo-
ming Valley Federation of Men’s
Bible Classes in cooperation with
the Luzerne County Sunday School
Association.
The public is invited to the wor-
ship service at 11 a.m. The church
is located on Route 415, Idetown.

NESBITT MEMORIAL HOSPI-
TAL is currently seeking volunteers
to serve as supervisors for the
summer candy striper program.
The upcoming session will be held
from June 16 through August 17.
Candy striper supervisors offer
guidance to candy stripers and
assistance to various hospital
departments and nursing units in
scheduling and coordinating the pro-
gram. Volunteer hours for supervi-
sors are flexible, and complete
training is provided. The candy
striper program is under the aus-
pices of the Nesbitt Memorial Hos-
pital Auxiliary, and Paula Denisco
serves as Chairman of the program.

THE SEVENTH ANNUAL PENN-
SYLVANIA STATE CAKE DECO-
RATORS’ SHOW AND CONVEN-
TION will be held in Wilkes-Barre
at Gennetti’s Best Western Motor
Inn on June 21 and 22.
The two-day show and convention
will be open to the publice Saturday,
June 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with
demonstrations from 11 a.m. to 2:30
p.m. and Sunday, June 2 from 11
a.m. to 4 p.m., demonstrations from
1-4 p.m. The demonstrations are
open to the public free of charge
and will include: sugar moulding,
ice sculpture, gumpaste flowers,
bread dough and vegetable carving
and garnishes.
The 1986 State Show-Convention
will be hosted by the local cake
decorators’ club, Frosting Friends
of Luzerne County, which is spon-
sored by the Luzerne County Recre-
ation Department, John Charles,
Director.
EVA INGERSOLL GATLING,
Interim Executive Director of the
Wyoming Historical and Geological
Society, announced recently that the
Swetland Homestead, originally
scheduled to open to the public on
June 5, will be open Thursday,
Friday, Saturday and Sunday after-
noons from 12 noon to 4 p.m. begin-
ning June 19.

THE KINGSTON TOWNSHIP
RECREATION COMMISSION will
begin its Summer Recreation Pro-
gram with registration for Township
children, Kindergarten through 6th
grade, at the Westmoreland Ele-
mentary School, Trucksville, on
Monday June 23, from 9 a.m. to 3
p-m. A parent or guardian must be
present to register their child.
The Summer Program will be
held each weekday from June 23
through July 31, from 9 a.m. until 3
p.m. Participants will meet at the
Westmoreland Elementary School,
Trucksville, each morning except
Wednesdays, when they will gather
at the East Center Street Park,
Shavertown. Children are required
to bring a bag lunch and drink ech
day that they attend.

A FREE HEALTH FAIR will be
conducted by Nesbitt Memorial Hos-
pital on Wednesday, June 18 from 12
noon to 6 p.m. in the Auditorium,
Nesbitt Médical Arts Bldg., 534
Wyoming Avenue, Kingston. This
year’s expanded community health
fair is scheduled in conjunction with
the hospital auxiliary’s annual June
Festival.
Diabetes and cholesterol screen-
ings and blood typing will be per-
formed by the Laboratory. The Res-
piratory Therapy Department will
offer carbon monoxide testing, and
the Nursing Department will con-
duct blood pressure screenings and
height and weight measurements
for adults and children as well as
distribute a personal health diary to
each participant.
