George Bennett Common, of 17
Split Rail Lane, Dallas, died May 23
in Sarasota, Fla.
Born in North Tonawanda, N.Y.,
he resided in the Wyoming Valley
since 1947 and wintered in Florida
the past 10 years.
He was a graduate of Cornell
University, New York, and a
member of its Phi-Gamma Delta
Fraternity. He was the founder and
chairman of the board of directors
of Common & Company Inc., Shav-
ertown.
He was a member of Kingston
Lodge 395 F & AM, Caldwell Consis-
tory; Irem Temple Country Club,
Palm Aire Country Club; and past
president of Irem Men’s Golf Asso-
ciation.
Surviving are his wife, Helen;
son, A.T. Common, Pensacola, Fla.;
daughter, Susan Sargisson, Wash-
ington, D.C.; brothers, Theodore,
West Lawn; James, Riverside,
Conn.; three grandchildren, Scott,
Bruce and John.
Royce Day
Royce Day, 62, of RD 1, Noxen
(Buckwheat Hollow) died May 28 in
Wilkes-Barre General Hospital fol-
lowing a long illness:
Born in Ontario, Canada, he
resided for 30 years in Montana and
was employed as a chef for the 76
Company.
He was raised at Harveys Lake
and resided for the last nine years
in the Beck Mountain area, where he
was employed by Kenneth Crispell’s
Garage, retiring in 1985.
‘Surviving are his wife, the former
Verna Hubbell, at home; stepdaugh-
ters, Mrs. Susan Rodgers, Wilkes-
Barre; Mrs. Anita Hodick, Shaver-
town; Mrs. Blanche Grady, Exeter;
six grandchildren.
Mary Duffy
Mary E. Duffy, of 220 Lake St.,
Meadows Apts., Dallas, died May 27
in her apartment, following a brief
illness.
Born in Pittston, she resided in
Wyoming for the past 46 years,

She was a graduate of St. John’s
Evanelist School, Pittston, and a
sember of the Gate of Heaven
Church, Dallas, and its Altar and
Rosary Society.
She and her husband, Francis M.,
celebrated their 50th wedding anni-
versary in August, 1985.
Suriviving, in addition to her hus-
band, are a son, Robert, Newark,
De.; daughter, Mrs. Cathy Mugford,
Dallas; five grandchildren; sisters,
Mrs. Kate Culleton, Brooklyn, N.Y.;
and Mrs. Rose McManaman, Wyo-
ming. She was preceded in death by
sisters, Mrs. Margaret McCawly
and Mrs. Helen Pope; and a
brother, Edward Gallagher.
Michael Kapral
Michael Kapral, age 64, of 53
Spring St., Shavertown, died May 27
at Nesbitt ‘Memorial Hospital,
Kingston, shortly after admission.
Born in Larksville, he was a
graduate of Larksville High School
and had attended the University of
Pittsburgh and the University of
Scranton. He had been employed as
a construction welder by the Inter-
national Brotherhood of Plumbers
and Pipefitters, Local 112 of Bingh-
amton, N.Y.
He was a member of St. Mary’s
Byzantine Church, Kingston, and
had served in the U.S. Merchant
Marine during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, the former
Maxine Teribury; son, Michael
Gene, Oswego, N.Y.; brothers,
John, Levittown; Frank, New
London, Conn.; sister, Mrs. Mary
Kokinda, Courtdale.
John Cybulski
John Cybulski, of 112 W. Center
Hill Rd., Dallas, died May 29, in
Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre,
where he had been a patient for one
week.
Born in Edwardsville, he attended
the Jackson and Lehman Township
schools and had been a resident of
Dallas for most of his life. Before
retiring, he was employed as a
carpenter by Swoyer Construction
Co., Forty Fort.
He was a member of Gate of
Heaven Church, Dallas, and was a
Navy veteran of World War II. He
was a member of the Daddow Isaac
American Legion Post 672, Dallas.
Surviving are his wife, the former
Helen Yablonski; son, Michael,
Houston, Texas; brothers, Paul
Cybul, Shavertown; Matthew, Carv-
erton; sister, Mrs. Betty Gavalchik,
Mercersburg; one grandson;
nephew, Anthony Garbush, Shaver-
town.
Gertrude Schneider
Gertrude C. Schneider, 65, of Dav-
enport Street, Dallas, died May 31
in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital
following a prolonged illness.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was a
graduate of Scranton Central High
School and the LPN program of the
Nesbitt Hospital. She was employed
at Nesbitt Memorial Hospital,
Kingston, as a licensed practical
nurse for a time.
She was a member of the Prince
of Peace Church, Dallas, and its
Altar Guild. She was also a member
of the American Legion Auxiliary,
Wilkes-Barre.
Surviving are her husband,
Joseph F.; daughter, Mrs. Judith
Elston, Kettering, Ohio; three
grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by a son, Joseph, in 1978.
Sandra Fallon
Sandra C. Fallon, 50, of Brookfield
Apartments, Dallas, died June 1 at
her home following an illness.
Born in Buffalo, N.Y., she was a
graduate of Lafayette High School,
Buffalo, where she received her
Bachelor of Science degree in Biol-
ogy. She also earned her master’s
degree in social work from Mary-
wood College, Scranton.
She was a member of Prince of
Peace Episcopal Church, Dallas.
Surviving are children, Paula
Abrantes, Wilkes-Barre; Jane F.
Abrantes and George Abrantes,
both at home.
Lola Roat
Mrs. Lola J. Roat, of 31 Windsor
Drive, Dallas, died May 28 at her
home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Larksville, she had
resided in Dallas since October,
1985.
Before her retirement in 1972, she
managed the Roat Hardware and
Supply Co., Kingston, which was
founded by her late husband, Harry
C. Roat, who preceded her in death
in 1965.
Mrs. Roat was a graduate of
Mansfield States Teachers College
and, during her earlier career, she
taught in the elementary depart-
ment of the Wilkes-Barre School
District.
Surviving are daughters, Mrs.
Marilyn Pope, with whom she
resided; son, Harry C. Roat Jr,
Benton; three grandchildren.
Thomas Metz
Thomas F. Metz, Jr., 43, Carver-
ton Road, Kingston Township died
May 31, at his home following an
illness.
Born in Kingston, he graduated
from Westmoreland High School,
Class of 1960. He was a former U.S.
Navy radioman and a former part-
ner in T.T.& G. Construction Co.
becoming its sole proprietor in 1983.
Mr. Metz was a member and
former Sunday School teacher for
the Glenview Independent Bible
Church, Shavertown.
Surviving are his parents; his
wife, the former Sharon Stuart;
sons, Richard and Todd at home;
sisters, Mrs. Penny O’Donnell,
Wilkes-Barre; Mrs. Terri Jones,
Hunlock Creek; brother, George,
Kingston Twp.
Donna Rogers
Mrs. Donna M. Rogers, 43, of
Vernon, died suddenly June 1 at her
home.
Born in East Orange, N.J., she
was a graduate of Dallas High
School and resided in Vernon fo the
past 15 years.
She was a member of the Blessed
Sacrament Church, Centermore-
land.
Surviving are husband, Donald;
son, David, at home; sister, Judy
ManPuso, Scranton.
No injuries were reported as a
result of a two car crash, last
Saturday afternoon along Route 309
in Kingston Township.
According to reports, Samuel
Hughes, 30 W. Liberty St., Ashley,
was traveling south on Rt. 309 in the
passing lane when he noticed that
an unknown vehicle was stopped
ahead in the right hand lane. Mean-
while a car driven by Marc S.
Friedman, 4688 Soho County, Vir-
ginia Beach, pulled out in front of
the unidentified car and into the
path of the Hughes vehicle where
the two collided.
Friedman stated, however, that the
driver of the unknown car motioned
for Friedman to go ahead and pull
out.
Hughes’ 1972 Ford had to be
towed. The Friedman vehicle was
driven from the scene.
A Trucksville FH left the scene
of an accident Friday morning after
his car was involved in a two-car
crash on Rt. 309, Trucksville.
Robert J. Koziel, 189 S. Memorial
Highway, Trucksville, fled the scene
after his 1975 Olds Delta 88 was
involved in a mishap with a car
driven by Polly Ann Swepston, RD
1, Box 477, Dallas.
