DENMON Staft Correspondent Dallas Junior High girls captured the Annual District 2 Track and Field championship Saturday in Scranton led by wins in the 1600 meter, 400 meter and 3200 meter runs and Sue Wells’ win the high jump turning in a 4-8 mark. Gretchen Schuler took the 1600 meter run in 5:56.4 for the Mountai- neers. The Dallas girls had a total of 59 points, 17% of Pittston Area with 41%, and 21 points in front of third place Lake-Lehman, who finished with 38. The 400 meter team of Sue Wells, Laura Poynton, Lisa Hite and Pam Novitsky , came in first in 56.3. Debbie Drasnin, Wendy Hozempa, Jennifer Prebola, and Gretchen Schuler took the 3200 meter run in 11:07.3. Winning time of the 1600 meter was 4:37.6. The girls were presented with a plaque engraved with District 2 Junior High champions, which is on display at the Dallas Junior High. Lake-Lehman’s Michelle Lukas set a new record of 65.7 in the 400 meter dash while her teammate Carolyn James finsihed first in the 3200 run in 13.09.2. Dallas Junior High boys finished second in the District 2 competition 10 points behind Pittston Area, who took first with 54 points. Dallas set a new record in the 3200 meter relay with a time of 8:55.2, breaking the previous record time of 9:13.4 set by Tunkhannock. The young Mountaineers also broke their own distridct record of 3:52 in the 1600 meter relay with a time of 3:51.3. Mount Hugh Mundy broke the 3200 meter run time of 10:59.9 set by Tunkhannock’s Tony Adamo in 1984, when he (Mundy) finished the run in 10:52. Mundy also came in first in the 1600 meter run in 4:50.4 and Mount Jim Evans took first in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:11.5. The junior high girls finished season competition undefeated with a 9-0 record and two weeks ago won the six event Tunkhannock Relays. The junior high boys squad also had a successful season with an overall record of 7-2. Robert Mitkus is coach of both the junior high girls and boys track squads. Dallas girls took a two-game sweep over Hazleton and Hanover in a tri-meet with Maureen Wisneski and Ann Balonis leading the Moun- taineers to an 84-57 win over Hazle- ton and a 107-32 victory over Hano- ver. Wisneski took the 200 meter run in 13:52 and the 1600 meter run in 6:10.6. Christy Fairchild and Gigi Laylo were also double winners for the Mountaineers. Hazleton managed to split by defeating Hanover 103-38. DENMON With the Memorial Day holiday fast approaching most of the leagues at Bonomo’s Sports Center are coming to a close. Only one or two have rolloffs left to decide the season’s championships. The others are looking forward to their end of the year banquets, dinner-dances or picnics where they will be presented with awards they have won. A few of the more dedicated bowlers have enrolled in the Summer League which will begin right after the holiday. In the Imperialette League Mahaffey Oil took the season’s championship last Wednesday night when they defeated first half champs, Humphrey’s Apparel by more than 300 pins. G. Bachman led the oil team to the title with 181-214 (530). F. Marth added 175 and Captain M. Neifert rolled a big 188. J. Clark was high for the apparel team with 172 (479) and C. Williams added 171. The league will hold its dinner-dance, May 24, at the Flam- ingo Room in West Pittston. No roll-off was necessary in the Ladies Country League since Bonomo Sports Center took the first and second half title with Fashion Vending placing second. Grotto Pizza came in thrid and the last night of bowling, Castlettes moved from last to fourth place while Gordon Insurance dropped from fourth to sixth. G.H. Harris finished in fifth spot. L. Maciejczak took high single game the last night by hitting the pins for 171-244 (574) to lead Fash- jon Vending to three points from Gordon’s L. Cyphers followed with 176 (500). K. Scavone’s 187 (492) showed the way for Bonomo’s three point win from Grotto Pizza, whose high bowler was D. Zurinski’s 476. J. Mekeel’s 473 and B. Strazdus’ 170 aided the Castlettes in taking three points from G.H. Harris to move into fourth spot. K. Kalafsky’s 187- 172 (490) was high for the Harris team. Tom Reese girls picked up three points from Franklin’s in the Bow- lerette League with none of the girls able to break high scores. M. Brown rolled 182 (471), D. Long hit pins for 183 and C. Badman added 181 to lead Brent Long to three points from Hoagie Bar girls, whose high bowler was M. Reese with 171. | In the Community Service League Bayo’s Ice shut out IGA paced by B. Weaver’s 215 (590) and F. Cornell’s 212 (584). Fino’s Pharmacy took three from Gino’s Shoe Store II led by R. Bonomo’s big 216-210 (592) and K. Youngblood’s walloping 243 (587). C. Kazokas posted 537 for Gino’s. G.H. Harris Associates copped three from Gino’s Shoe Store I sparked by Frank’s 244 (601) and R. Shoemaker’s 566. J. Roan knocked down pins for 595 and C. Orkwis hitting 220 (571), F. Cornell rolling 202-200 (570) and S.. Vigorito posting 220 (566). G.H. Harris and Bermudas split 2-2 with Harris’ T. Doughton’s 561 high for both teams. C. Kazokas added 532 to the Harris win. Forty Back Mountain bowlers left this week to compete in the Penn- sylvania Women’s Annual Bowling Tournament in Erie. They will bowl in two different houses, Rolling Meadow Lanes and Eastway Lanes.
