The Dallas girls’ softball team ran its record to 11-0
last week by winning four games in five days. The
Lady Mountaineers scored 11 runs in the third inning,
Friday, against Hazleton to win 15-5 and led by Joyce
Tinner’s three-run homer scored nine runs in the fifth
inning to take GAR 13-3 in five innings, Wednesday.
The Dallas girls used four runs in the seventh inning
on Tuesday to overcome Tunkhannock’s 3-2 lead by
shoving two runs across for a 4-3 victory and against
Coughlin, Monday, the Lady Mountaineers outscored
Coughlin 11-1 for a win.
16 BATTERS
In the game with Hazleton, the Lady Mountaineers
sent 16 to the plate in the third inning when scoring
their 11 runs. Kim Rinehimer, Lisa Gabel and Tracy
Cave had two hits each. It marked the second
consecutive game that the Dallas girls hit well against
their opponents.
Tracy Cave pitched the entire game giving up only
two hits, striking out two and walking only one.
The Lady Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the first
inning when Tracy Hunter singled then scored after
one was out on the Hazleton’s centerfielder’s error.
The Mountaineers ran the score to 4-0 when Kim
Rinehimer drove out a double and went to third on an
infield grounder by Lisa Gabel. Rinehimer scored on a
single by Cave. Chris Legenz went to first on an error,
then she and Cave scored on a single by Tracy Hunter.
GET 10 HITS
Then in the bottom of the third, the Lady Mountai-

the bottom of the first to lead 2-0 but Dallas jumped
back in the top of the second inning with three runs.
The Grenadiers fought back and pushed across their
final run in the bottom of the second to tie the score at
3-3.
The Lady Mountaineers moved ahead 4-3 in the top
of the fourth, then erupted with nine runs in the top of
the fifth behind Tinner’s three-run homer and a triple
by Tammy Daveski.
Lisa Sherkness was the winning pitcher for Dallas,
striking out one, walking two and giving up four hits in
the three innings she pitched. Sherkness came in as
relief after Cave was injured when a Grenadier slid
into Cave’s leg when she took a throw at the plate.
Tunkhannock took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first
without the benefit of a hit.
BOTH SCORELESS
Both teams went scoreless until the top of the fourth
inning when the Tigers scored two runs to move in
front 3-2. In the fifth inning the Tigers put runners on
base again with one out but Tammy Daveski ended the
inning when she took aline drive from Tiger Mary
Ellen Aitken, then whirled around and caught Chrissy
Stevens off first base to end the inning.
Tiger hurler Erin Davies gave up only three hits in
the first six innings and it looked as though Dallas
would suffer their first loss until the bottom of the
seventh.
Hunter and Rinehimer led off the inning with singles

around for her teammates.

Vissotski short fly to centerfield, then made a running
catch after two Crusaders were on base. She ended the
threat and the inning by throwing to shortstop Joyce
Tinner, who relayed the ball to catcher Lori Bartleson

Defense
defeats
Dallas
By RICK ROGERS
Staff Correspondent
In the battle of the Back Moun-
tain, it was defense that made the
difference in Lake-Lehman’s 7-5
Monday at the loser’s field.
“Defense is what won the game
for us today,” said a happy Lehman
Coach Dwight Barbacci after the
game. “Any time that you beat
Dallas, it is a good win. Dallas is a
good team and they hit the ball
hard, but we were able to make the
plays.”
KNIGHTS SCORE FIRST
Lehman got on the score board
early when it parlayed a walk by
Bill George a triple by freshman
Rich James and a sacrifice fly for a
2-0 lead in the second inning.
Dallas cut Lehman’s lead to 2-1 on
a solo home run by Rob Dombek in
the third.
The Black Knights then took
advantage of three walks issued by
Dallas starter Rob Dombek and a
catcher interference call to go
ahead 5-1 in the fourth.
After George took first when the
catcher interfered with his swing,
Dombek walked a man before Todd
Krupa hit an infield single to load
the bases. Two walks later, Lehman
had two more runs with no outs.
BIG INNING
A big inning for Lehman was
averted when Dallas shortstop Mare
Ramirez turned a beautiful bases-
loaded double play. One run scored
on the play giving Lehman a 5-1
cushion.
- The Mounts got one run back in
the sixth. John Wertman hit a one
out double in front of the left fielder.
Johnny Harris followed with a RBI
single. But Dallas had its hope for a
big inning dashed when Scott Fran-
cis hit into a double play to end the
frame.
Lehman added two critical runs in
the top of the seventh. After a
leadoff walk, Jason Cadwalader sin-
gled to right to put runners on
thecorners. One out later, freshman
Keith Schultz, who had struck out in
three previous at bats, hit a high
fast ball off reliever Tim Moyers
into left field to score a run. George
followed with a single down the
third base line to score Cadwalader
for a 7-2 lead.
But, Dallas did not pack it up
without a fight.
