Staff Correspondent
Residents of Midway Manor,
Shavertown and Trucksville, and
Bunker Hill area of Trucksville,
have a new business in their area —
a bakery with a complete line of
fresh-baked goods.
Maureen and Charles Szalkowski
of Edwardsville opened the Colonial
Bakery Shoppe in Hickory Corners
Plaza the end of January. Although
the bakery business is entirely new
to Maureen, she always liked to
bake and decorate cakes and
enjoyed working with food, so when
she and Charles started looking for
a business, they decided on a
bakery.
When they found a shop for rent
in Hickory Corners, the Szalkowskis
decided to open a bakery in that
area because it is surrounded by a
growing population and there were
no similar businesses there.
A former bookkeeper with Family
Service Association of Wilkes-Barre,
Maureen resigned her position and
took over management of the
bakery.
She carries a complete line of
baked goods made daily by Linden
Bakery of Scranton and Royal
Bakery of Wyoming. There are a
wide variety of breads including
white, rye, pumpernickel, cheese,
pepperoni, raisin, cinnamon, nut,
marble, health and Jewish bread.
Hard rolls, French rolls, sandwich
and onion rolls, hot dog buns and
bagels may be purchased at Colo-
nial Bakery as well as Danish of
various kinds, sweet rolls, muffins
or croissants.
All kinds of cakes, pastries, deco-
rated cakes, cookies, Stopay and
Cavanaugh chocolates are sold by
Maureen and Charles Szalkowski,
as well as the Sunday paper, soda,
milk and soon Instant Lottery tick-
ets may be purchased at the
bakery. :
Looking for a decorated cake for
a special occasion? Stop in and see
Maureen. She will assist you in
ordering an originally decorated
cake for birthday, wedding or anni-
versary. Maureen recently received
her baker’s license and will bake
and do custom decorated cakes to
order. The Szalkowski’s have one
daughter, Alison, freshman at Wyo-
ming Valley West. In her leisure
time, Maureen enjoys swimming or
bike riding.
She took courses in bookkeeping
at Luzerne County Community Col-
lege and a cake decorating course
given by Wilton at Boscov’s Depart-
ment Store.
The pale yellow walls of the
bakery, contrasting wall-to-wall car-
peting, and large windows provide a
light, airy atmosphere, pleasantly
setting off the mouth-watering
sweets in the shiny display case.
Beautiful plants and floral arrange-
ments and Maureen’s friendly smile
and pleasant personality encourage
customers return again and again.
For the convenience of area resi-
dents, Colonial Bakery is open daily
Tuesday through Sunday.
Maureen advises all customers
“If you don’t see it, ask for it —
Maureen will get it!”
