Winners of the ‘People’s Choice Awards’ were announced at the 12th annual awards show, telecast live from the Santa Monica Civic auditorium on the CBS network (Channel 22). ‘““The People’s Choice Awards” is produced by Bob Precht and directed by Walter C. Miller, with Pierre Cos- sette serving as executive -pro- WYSOCKI ducer. John Denver hosted the awards ceremony honoring ‘‘America’s favorites’’ in entertainment as ascertained in a special survey con- ducted by the Gallup Organization. Intentions are commendable, but are such surveys, polls, and the ratings true indicators of American sentiment? How qualitative and quantitative can they be when the technique usually employed is random sampling? Much dissatis- faction has been voiced about the limiting factors inherent in such systems. In regard to the ‘People’s Choice,” perhaps a better approach would be a write-in campaign or a call-in method similar to the one used periodically by ‘‘Entertain- ment Tonight.” This would enable everyone the opportunity to cast votes and consequently, a higher degree of accuracy might be achieved in the results. Everyone must realize that writ- ing a fan letter or belonging to a fan club is highly indicative of interest, and is far more time-consuming than simply casting a vote. For the sake of interest, some background information is provided as a basis of comparison to the results of the “People’s Choice” poll. According to data compiled by author Michael Levine, Michael J. Fox is TV’s reigning fan mail champ, receiving an average of 21,000 letters a week. Fox was nominated in the favorite motion picture category along with Clint Eastwood and Sylvester Stallone. Number two in fan mail is Bill Cosby (20,500 letters per week); fifth is Don Johnson (11,000 letters per week); and seventh is Philip Dazzled Scouts Michael Thomas (10,000). Both Cosby and Johnson were nominated for ‘“‘People’s Choice Awards’; Thomas was not. In the female TV performer cate- gory, nominees were Joan Collins, Linda Evans, and Phylicia Ayers- Allen Rashad. In Levine's listing, Collins and Evans were third and fourth with fan letters averaging 18,000-19,000. Rashad was not in the top 10, but Victoria Principal (11, 000) and Donna Mills (9,500) were. Receiving nominations in the TV dramatic program category were the highly popular ‘Dynasty’ and “Miami Vice”, but “Hill Street Blues” nominated at the exclusion of “Cagney & Lacey” is the one program on television which has managed to stay on the air due to the “people’s choice.” It is a show that can boast of 14 American fan clubs and 11 foreign ones. Interest is so high and fans so active that the production company had to limit the amount of fan clubs it would offi- cially sanction. I STOPPED IN AT Sue Hand’s Imagery the other day and was intrigued with the newest artistic additin to her shop, her SuStine ceiling. -0- The idea of decorating the ceiling of her shop with a block dsigned by each graduating senior was sug- gested by one of her students. Each student makes a hand print, writes what high school they are graduat- ing from, where they are going to college and draws a picture that describes something about them. It’s fascinating to see the various blocks, each one telling a story of all its own. : Stop in and take a look!
