DENMON Staff Correspondent Dallas girl cagers pulled an upset win over the favored Honesdale girls, 59-51, in the first round of the District 2 AAA playoffs at Nanticoke High School last Friday night. The win advances the Lady Mountai- neers to face Dunmore, who defeated GAR, Wednes- day (tonight) at Old Forge High School. Eileen Walsh plaved outstanding ball in the first half and Joanne Cook and Angie Kern did some stellar shooting in the second half to pull out the game for the Dallas girls. FIRST PERIOD LEAD The Lady Mountaineers took a first period 12-10 lead and stretched it to 27-19 at halftime. The Honesdale Hornets rallied in the third period to outscore Dallas 14-11 to come within five points, 38-33, but the Mountaineers hung on and scored 21 points to the Hornets 18 in the final period, coming through in the final minutes of the game. LEADING SCORER OUT The Hornets leading scorer, Heidi Robbins, sat out the game on the bench with a cast on her arm. The leading scorer had been averaging 23 points a game during the season. : Kathy Murray paced Honesdale with 17 points, Lurie Beck followed with 14 and Wilcox added 11. KERN LEADS DALLAS : Kern led the Lady Mountaineers with 15 points, going 11-for-16 from the foul line and Cook added 12, four two-pointers from the court and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free stripe. LADY KNIGHTS ELIMINATED The Black Knights of Lake-Lehman were eliminated from the AA playoffs when they went down 61-39 to Bishop Hannan, Friday night, at Mid-Valley High School. The win advances Hannan to face Riverside, Wednesday night at Bishop Hoban. ° LEVI, KASARDA SCORE BIG Debbie Levi and Janine Kasarda scored 14 each, Levi nitting four two-pointers and 6-for-12 from the foul line and Kasarda putting five through the nets and hitting 4-for4 from the charity stripe. Pam Coolbaugh added nine hitting for four two-pointers and going 1- for-2 from the line. Dallas boys are knocked from D-2 Dallas Mountaineers were leading 46-42 going into the final quarter in the opening round of the AAA District 2 playoffs last Thursday night, but were closed out in the final period when the Comets changed players positions in their man-to-man defense. Crestwood then took a 63-53 win to advance to the semi-final playoff against first-seeded Valley View. The Comets overtook the Mountaineers and went into a six point lead when their Jim McGovern canned three two-point goals with less than three minutes left on the clock in the fourth period. J DACOSIN SCORES 18 : Mountaineer Dennis Dacosin, who finished the nigh with 18 points, brought the Mountaineers within four points by hitting two free throws from the foul line with only 2:15 remaining in the game. McGovern then took over and gave the Comets a 57- 51 lead with less than 1:30 remaining in the game. Comet Tom Bentz stretched the team lead to seven points and in the final minutes Crestwood offense poured it on to outscore the Mountaineers 21-7 for the period and take a 10 point win. MOUNTAINEERS CONTROL BOARDS The Mountaineers held control of the boards for the first three quarters but broke down in the fourth period when the Comets broke through the Mountai- neers press. — CHARLOT M. DENMON Spring training? The Penn State/Wilkes-Barre Mountain Lions baseball team is on an eight-day Spring training trip in Coco Beach, Florida. The team, along with members of the Penn State Ogontz campus baseball team, left March 1 and will play eight games while in the Sunshine state. Prior to Cape Kennedy. Coach Monick says the pre-season workout will help the team get ready to open its 1986 season hosting Luzerne County Community College in a doubleheader on March 29 at 2 p.m. at Roosevelt Field.
