Coach Ed Ladamus Lake-Lehman
grapplers placed in 11 of the 12
weight classes in last week’s Dis-
trict 2 competition at King’s Col-
lege. Ten of the Black Knights
advanced to the finals with 132-lb.
Bob Guzenski, 145-Ib. Don Spencer
and Hwt. Ed Stratford copping
titles. Stratford’s win over the
Mohawks’ Bill Edwards earned him
championship for the AA Division
by a half point 176-175.
EARLY LEAD
The Knights took a 163-147% lead
into the final competition but the
Mohawks took six of the weight
classes to bring the race for the
team title down to the final bout of
the competition.
A crucial point in the finals was
98-1b. Matt Reinert’s default to
Steve Price due to an injured shoul-
der. 105-1b. Tim Casey surprised
Knight Jeff Austin by recording a 6-
2 win over the tough Knight wres-
tler. Austin’s only points was a
stalling point and an escape late in
the bout.
GO TO REGIONALS
The Knights will go into Regionals
this weekend in good shape by
putting 10 men on the mats since
both first and second place winners
go to the AA competition at Wil-
liamsport.
98-Ib. Matt Reinert goes as run-
nerup after his default to Price.
Reinert advanced to the finals by
shutting out Parette of Bishop
Hoban. 105-1b. Austin took a major
11-3 decision from Hoban’s Lamo-
reaux in the semi-finals then fell 6-2
to Casey of Meyers. 112-1b. Dave
Guzenski took a major 11-2 decision
from O’Hara’s Tony Montana but
lost in the finals in a close, hard-
fought 2-1 battle with Hoban’s Dan
Mimnaugh.
SMITH WINS
Knight Joe Smith flattened 126-1b.
Packy Kelly of Scranton Prep in
1:32 but was edged 4-3 in the finals
by Bob McFadden of Meyers and
132-Ib. Bob Guzenski captured his
weight class title by clamping Tom
Kaniuk of O’Hara in 3:14 and in the
finals taking superior 13-0 decision
from Mohawk Dan Vesey.
Mark Yaple decisioned 138-1b.
Mohawk Sean Foley 11-3 but he lost
to O’Hara’s Bill Burdyne on an 18-2
technical fall in 4:36. 145-1b. Don
Spencer took a class title for the
Knights by defeating Leroy DeGraf-
fenreid 13-2 in the semi-finals and
taking Scranton Prep’s Frank
Rempe 6-4 in the finals.
GEORGE GETS PIN
At 155, Knight Tim Shaw lost 6-3
to O’Hara’s Charles Balough 6-3 but
167-Ib. Bill George pinned O’Hara’s
Matt Caputo in 1:05. 185-lb. Scott
Shafer took Meyers Charles Fick in
an easy 10-5 bout but he lost to
Hoban’s Dave Suda 3-1 in overtime
after the two grapplers ended the
regular time in a 3-3 draw. Coming
down to the wire with the Mohawks
in the lead Hwt. Ed Stratford did
what he had to do for his team to
win. He decisioned Edwards 5-1 in
the finals after pinning Scranton
Prep’s Larry Durkin in the semi-
finals in 42 seconds.
Dallas Mountaineers did not. get a
man past the quarterfinals where
98-1b. Jim O’Donnell was pinned in
2:57 by Tunkhannock’s Kevin Kal-
monowitz after he drew a buye in
the preliminaries. 105-1b. Bryan
Mathers drew a bye in the prelimi-
naries but lost 9-8 to Hanover’s Jim
Van Gorder in the quarterfinals and
112-1b.
Dallas Junior High girls’ basket-
ball team lost its bid for the overall
District 2 title last Tuesday at the
Coughlin gym when the AAA Nanti-
coke Trojans edged them out 33-31
Tournament
is planned
Preparations for the 56th Annual
Rogers Memorial Amateur Basket-
ball Tournament Classic, believed
to be the oldest and longest running
tournament in the state are under-
way at the Greater Wilkes-Barre
YMCA.
The tournament will be held start-
ing April 7. This year it will feature
four divisions:
Two Adult: Open Division; 6’1” &
Under Division.
Two High School: Boy’s Scholas-
tic Division;’ Boy’s Non Scholastic
Division (nor varsity players).
The tournament is named in
honor of William A. Rogers, who
served as Physical Director at the
‘Y’ for 25 years.
Games will be held at the recently
renovated Wilkes-Barre YMCA gym
starting 6:30 p.m., April 7. Deadline
for entries will be March 31 at 8
p.m.

Trojan Holly Kosloski led the Tro-
jans with 10 points to help the
offense in scoring while Kathy Szy-
chowski and Diane Pashinski’s
strong defense held off Jennifer
Besecker and Laura Poynton.
Both teams played even in scoring
from the floor but two more free
shots from the line gave the two
point advantage to the Trojans.
The Trojans came out strong in
the first quarter outscoring the
young Mountaineers 15-6 but Dallas
came to life in the second quarter
outscoring the Trojans 10-7 and
coming within six points of Nanti-
coke.
Nanticoke added three plus points
over the Mountaineers in the third
quarter but Dallas came to life in
the final period and strong play by
Jennifer Besecker and Laura Poyn-
ton brought the Back Mountain girls
to within two points of the Trojans
as the Mountaineers outscored Nan-
ticoke 12-5.
Besecker paced the junior high
girls with 13 points and Poynton
collected 10. Besecker made five of
the Mountaineers seven points from
the charity stripe while Hunter hit
two from the floor and added two
from the free stripe.

one game with 210. B. Strazdus
knocked down pins for 175 (486) to
lead the Castlettes in picking up
three points from G.H. Harris.
In the Back Mt. Church League
Orange shut out Dallas A paced by
H. Shupp’s 521. Consistent bowling
helped the winning team outscore
the Dalals team whose B. Williams
walloped pins for 235 (601). Carver-
ton B took three from Shavertwon B
despite C. Kazokas rolling 543 for
the losing five and Carverton A
copped three from Shavertown A.
Glen Mazer’s big 630 including 244,
and Gary Mazer’s 213 (525) led
Maple Grove to three points from
Trucksville C. J. Cobleigh’s 502 was
high for E. Dallas who earned three
from Trucksville B.
In Bonomo’s Major League, G.H.
Harris shut out Hambos sparked by
D. Purvin’s 225 (590), C. Kazokas’
224 (586), H. Bennett’s 575.
Inn blanked Sweet Valley Outfit-
ters sparked by F. Cornell's 220
(596), S. Vigorito’s 575, K. Orkwis’
542 and K. Spencer’s 526. Monk
Plumbing picked up three from K
