marriage is more complicated and rid-
dled with more paperwork than it used to
be. Unlike tax receipts, credit card bills
and business forms, however, some wed-
ding paperwork is optional. :
Of course, a marriage license and
medical statements still are required in
most areas. But two optional pieces of
paper are becoming more popular -
premarital contracts and certificates of
completion from marriage training
courses.
These two may seem contradictory -
training designed to make a marriage
last and contracts for protection in case
of divorce. But that’s not necessarily so.
Most people define premarital con-
tracts in the most limited sense, that of
preparing for a divorce. Certainly, pre-
marital contracts can specify dispostion
of property and alimony in case of
divorce. But they also can specify almost
anything to which two future spouses
agree.
This can cover everything from how
household chores.
